The Salem witch trials where hearings held for the prosecution of people being accused of practicing witchcraft. These hearings where held in Colonial Massachusetts from the years 1692 to 1693. Many people, men and women where accused of being witches and practicing witch craft. This belief of witches among men was brought by the fear of the puritans, the first American settlers. These settlers were very religious people of the Christian faith. The witch hysteria in Salem was caused by the belief that satan was on earth and was recruiting people to praise him and do his dark magic. The hysteria erupted when a group of Salem girls proclaimed that they had been possessed by a witch. This brought fear into the villagers and things began to change in their Christian economy. The meaning behind "City Upon a Hill" was a righteous type of living under the light of God. It was seen to be a perfect way of life away from all the darkness of the dark and corrupt, sinful world. The people of Christian faith believd that this is the type of place to live in order to lead a life according to the laws of God. This type of belief lead the Puritans to build and make Harvard, Princeton, and many other famous colleges you may know today. The puritans where English protestants that wanted to separate from the corrupt Roman Catholic Church. They sought to purify the church by living completely by the bible and the words of their Father God. Puritans lived a very simple and humble life style where they where Jesus centered. They dressed simply and humbly and to past time they red and memorized scriptures. They in a way lived in fear for they wanted to be part of the "elect" which where the people that would be going to heaven. If they did not have an encounter with God they where the group that would be casted down to hell. Calivinism was the protestant theological system of John Calvin and his successors. This developed Luther's doctrine of justification by faith alone. It also emphasized the grace of God  and the doctrine of predestination. Calvinism believed in the existence of satan on earth. Which also meant that they believed in witches and warlocks.
