The artwork I picked is of an African American woman who seems to live in a generation where most African American women were maids for the Caucasians. She has a Caucasian child on her back as if she was a horse. Also, you can see in the artwork that the African American woman has a cleaning brush near her hand as if she was trying to clean the floor while the child is on her back. The artwork is very similar to an actual photo (the photo on the left). This piece of artwork demonstrates how the African American community suffered from injustice for decades in America. The purpose of Titus Kaphar making artwork like this is to acknowledge a part of history that is not talked about or in the typical history books.

I believe that a lot of Americans think that this is "white America", meaning that this country should be controlled by the Caucasians. I know for a fact that everything that I've been taught about America is not fully what happened. For decades the African American community were exclude from the history books so we will never know what really happened or who discovered what. A perfect example would be Katherine Johnson, an African American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. She was not acknowledged for her work until years later because she was an African American woman

I chose this image because people typically think that the Black Seminoles were just runaway slaves. In the image, it seems as if the slaves were afraid and looking out for people who would take them back to their masters. This image makes me think about how hard it was for slaves to escape and how brave these slaves were to even attempt to escape from their masters.

This image demonstrates how the Black Seminoles fought for their freedom rather than being afraid and hiding from the colonists. The difference between the first image and this image is that the runaway slaves went to war with the colonists to gain their freedom while in the first image, it seemed as if they were hiding.
