There are several different types of power and some types can only be used in certain situations, or are more effective in certain situations. No matter what form of power you may hold, it may prove ineffective in specific scenarios. Sebastion attempts to use his power to get the boatswain to do his job, he does this by cursing him, yelling, "A pox o’ your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, / incharitable dog!" (Shakespeare 1.1.41-42). Sebastion wants the boatswain to know that he is in power, however, in this situation, no one is in power, and while Sebastion is royalty, his influence has no effect in a storm.

Knowledge

Without the proper knowledge, it can be difficult to properly utilize any power you may hold.

Without the knowledge of when and how to use power, it becomes useless. Ariel asks Prospero, who is much weaker than him, for "My liberty" (Shakespeare 1.2.292).

Ariel has the power to free himself by many means but either chooses not to, or does not know how to.

Power can be gained by deception, you may believe that someone has more power than they do because they make it seem like they have power when they don't. This can be extremely dangerous because it makes it easy to give power to the wrong people.

Act 3: Power

Fear is an effective form of power and an easy way to control people. Ariel uses the form of a harpy to control Antonio, Sebastion, and Alonso and strikes fear in them. Alonso speaks frantically after seeing the harpy, "O, it is monstrous, monstrous!" (Shakespeare 3.3.116). Prospero, after using Ariel to scare them, thinks aloud, "They now are in my power" (Shakespeare 3.3.110). Prospero took control of the three using fear.

Act 2: Perspective

Perspective shapes the way we act. We are influenced by those around us and our perspective is made up of those around us. Caliban tells Steffano to "Beat him enough / After a little time I’ll beat him too" (Shakespeare 3.2.92-93). Caliban is influenced by those around him, specifically Prospero but even those he recently met, Trinculo states, "I shall laugh myself to death at this puppy-headed monster. A most scurvy monster. I could find in my heart to beat him" (Shakespeare 2.2.160-163). Caliban, having been influenced by Trinculo uses the same rudeness that he Trinculo had used on him. Caliban's limited influence led to an underdeveloped perspective which led to him using the same tactics and ideas that he has seen others use.
