It started in the 1930s mostly in the midwest and Norway. Teachers who taught here would teach every grade from kindergarten to high school. Students would walk to school no matter the weather to learn. They mostly focused on learning how to read and write. They also would learn math.

This schoolhouse was originally for boys only, but not long after girls could come to school. Boys and girls would sit on opposite sides of the classroom. The schoolhouses also didn't have bathrooms, instead they had an outhouse. They also didn't have power and would keep a furnace inside the schoolhouse for the winter. The childhood poem of "Mary had a little lamb" came from a 9-year old girl named Mary, whose lamb followed her to the schoolhouse one day.
