Name: Addyrio bin Madais
Matric Number: A182264
Date: 30/7/2023 (Sunday)

2. What have you done?
For this entire week I immersed myself in the world of botany. I first enrolled myself into a class in Coursera about Herbal Medicine and I started learning about the fundamental of herbal medicine and how to find a reliable research to support the usage of a particular herbs. After finishing this week material on Coursera I tried to apply what I've learn into my next activity.

For the practical part I went into a nearby forest to find and forged some herbs, plants and also mushroom and learn about them directly in their habitat. Of course before entering the forest I've prepared myself with the theory part regarding the plants, herbs or mushroom that I am looking for and also prepared myself with the equipment needed such as proper clothing, my phone to take picture and my physical journal. After that with the help from my mom and my sister I managed to find 2 medicinal plants, 3 edible mushroom and 1 plant that my community (The Dusun community in Sabah) use.
Then, all of the information that I gathered. I put it in my mini guidebook that I plan as my outcome later on.

The following days, I just focus on doing my research about those plants and herbs and at the same time also learning more about botany from online materials and YouTube Video.

3. Points to remember from Week 1
The class that I join in Coursera really put me into this perspective of what is the role of herbal medicine in this point of time because of the advancement of modern medicine. Can we reject herbal medicine entirely? Up until now I actually still thinking about this question.

4. Feelings and thoughts
I actually a bit scared to start my elective posting because I have zero skills and knowledge about botany. I'm afraid that my choice will be too hard and complex for me to finish. But after this 1st week, it really open my eyes that as long that I have an interest in this topic, learning about it from scratch will be just fine and enjoyable.

5. Difficulties/concerns. How did you cope?
My biggest issue is the weather, these past few days the weather have been unpredictable. Some days it was sunny then suddenly heavy rains for days after that. Especially during heavy rain, the electricity and connection become unstable , because of this I was unable to do my Coursera class. Raining time also hindered me from entering the woods, due to safety purposes I try to avoid doing my activity during the rain because of the possibility of falling branches and slipping due to slippery forest floor. The best thing that I can do was to wait, after the rain have subsided I quickly did my class and my activity.

6. 2 words to describe the elective posting progress so far.
Challenging and fun

7. Plan for next week (Week 2)
1. Finish material for week 3 and 4 in Coursera
2. Study and search more plants and herbs (possibly 3)
3. Update my mini guidebook

What have you done?
I have joined personal online programming class with Mr Fairuz, Software Engineer from Insider Security! We touched on basic coding skill in week 1, which is HTML. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is like the building blocks of creating websites. For a beginner like me, it is crucial to learn the basics before starting on more heavy things. In HTML, we use different codes (or tags) to tell the computer what each part of the webpage should be.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
- Basic structure of a HTML document
- Different HTML texts and their uses (different tags create links, texts, pictures or even tables)
- HTML is the simplest programming language there is so it is suitable for beginners like me.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I am excited and initially confused because this is like a whole new thing for me as someone whose field of studies revolve around medicine. It is fun to learn something that goes on behind the things that you use every day (websites). It’s like learning how to build castles from toy blocks.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Learning new things require time and effort. When learning something new, its normal to feel confused at times. So, it may take a while for me to understand programming languages but I’m not expecting myself to become an expert in just a matter of few weeks. I will just take my time and learn without a rush.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Exciting, Intriguing

7. For this week, I have learned about the basics of Forensic Science and the Atomic of Molecular Structures.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
I have learned the basic ideas of forensics science such as how association and reconstruction are important and helpful in recognizing the victim or suspect. I also learned about the Locard Exchange Principle in which it stated that “Every contact leaves traces”. Next is the concept of Atomic Structure with the methods for the determination of the presence of different elements in a given sample that can be reliable and sensitive in some cases.

4.

Hani Shaheerah binti Arif

A183586

24th-28th July 2023

2. What have you done?

This week marks the start of our elective postings. I have enrolled myself in an online course programme through Coursera on the topic, ‘Forensic Science’. In the span of five days, I was able to capture the big picture of what forensic science is all about. The recorded lecture videos provided for this week were more focused on the introduction with some of the few well known real life homicide cases in the early days of forensics. I have also completed the second topic of the week, ‘Chemical Analysis in Forensic Science’, which explains more in detail regarding the laboratory aspects of forensics. We were able to visualize the differences of each technique on how to analyze chemical evidence in helping to solve these cases.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

What I found most interesting from this week’s activity was how forensic science also has their limitations. Although forensic science plays a big role in proving Actus Reus, a guilty action, with the help of physical evidence from the crime scene, it cannot determine Mens Rea, a guilty mind or intention and that is because Mens Rea is concerned with what is going on inside someone’s head and not in the physical world. Secondly, I would also like to highlight the importance of elemental analysis in discovering the actual occurrence of events instead of assuming possible scenarios of a crime of no witnesses. Science can help uncover the unseen.

4. Your feelings & thoughts.

This week’s venture was really fun and interesting. What really made me super intrigued to get onto the next topic are the case examples explained by the professor. It is quite similar to watching crime shows on the television but knowing it actually happened in real life opens up a door to millions of questions in my mind.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The elemental analysis topics were a bit heavy on the chemical theories. It would be a lot helpful if we were able to visit the laboratories to experience how these analyses are done. Fortunately, a lot of videos regarding these machines are also available on YouTube nowadays.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far.

Amusing

Interesting

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I plan on completing the next two topics on Time of Death; Blood and DNA in Forensics. I will also be preparing for the upcoming quizzes by the end of next week.

What have you done?

I have indulged myself in a programming course called CS50 by Harvard University which basically involves an introduction to computer programming. I have gone through week 0 and week 1’s lecture and problem sets. Basically submitting some assignments that were tasked to us. First assignment was to build a game via Scratch and the second was to build a program to detect the type of credit cards based solely on the credit card number and test its viability via C language.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Basic understanding of the concepts of programming and grasping the fundamentals. Some key features on the GITHUB submission system they introduced and of course the C language itself which is supposedly known as the predecessor for all computer languages.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Intriguing, curious, good experience to try out something new. Having more fun than i thought i would. The satisfaction you get when the code you developed after an entire day finally works is just remarkable.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The assignments themselves proved to be quite the task, with the brief introduction they gave and the limited amount of knowledge they provided within the first 2 lectures, they tasked us to make our own code that would run as intended flawlessly. But through thick and thin, after quite a few typos, i completed the tasks and i was proud.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Fun and interesting

7.
