Not much is said about Kavanaugh’s appearance. In chapter one it is described that he wears glasses and is afraid of heights. From this, one can conclude that Kavanaugh is not very athletic and therefore he is not the best for the work on the wall.

In the beginning he is more closed, but he begins to open up when he gets to know the others. By getting to know the group, Kavanaugh develops friendships aswell as romantic feelings for Hifa, so that his time on the wall becomes more relaxed.

He is also very emotional; this is evident by the way he talks about the captain. (” The biggest fucking liar”) (p.31 l.11)

This overstatement shows cases his emotional sensitivity.

This is shown by the use of strong worlds such as (“Fucking Time”, bitched) (p. 23-p.24) which demonstrates certain aggressive and emotional feelings.

At the beginner of the story Kavanaugh is forced by the british government to work on the wall for two years. In order to protect England from the others. First Kavanaugh wants that the two years are over as quick as possible, because everything is so unsettling and cold on the wall. He thinks his work is so boring because nothing happens on his shift, but he cannot do anything to change the situation. This leads to a passive attitude and resignation.

It begins that Kavanaugh meets with Shoona and Hifa at the lunch time. (chapter 4) He begins to have feelings for Hifa this gets clear in chapter 5 where he scans her body. (p.43, ll.21-31) He gets to know the people such as Cooper, Hughes, and Mary. By getting to know the people he feels more warm hearted and he begins to arrange himself with the situation.

In chapter 13 Kavanaugh experience an attack by the other and because of this he is forced to go into exile with some off his friend. Two of his friends are dead and he is forced to leave his home. Kavanaugh loses his security and now tries to find a new home. 

In chapter 20 and 21 Kavanaugh finds a floating community that consists of 16 people. He becomes the community diver whose job it is to search for food under the water. This shows that Kavanaugh con adapt to new situations, by living in a completely different environment. 

In capter 22 and 23 the floating community is under attack, so that Kavanaugh as to flee again with Hifa. This shows that he can escape from dangerous situation alone.

Finally, he finds an oil rig where he is save with Hifa. This development shows that Kavanaugh can now survive on his own with a community. He is become independent and has learned to overcome his fears.

I want to tell you about my life in the time that your generation has so neglected.

There was never really a special relationship between us, it was always a distance, because even then when I was small, I had the same views as now. But I am writing to tell you that our planet is dying because of the "change", my generation is no longer allowed to decide alone what we can do, but have to keep watch on a big wall.  What lies behind this wall is nothing but water and stones floating in the sea. This world in which I now have to live, I owe to your generation and that of my grandparents. So I would say that I would rather live on the water with people who appreciate the earth than with you.

C: What you do is of course you hinder them from even getting to the wall is that clear!

K: Yes, sir noticed that.

C: Then let us get to work and stay alert, otherwise they'll be here even longer.

It is very good: a well-structured, well-paced story with a narrative drive that keeps you going through the monotony of life on the Wall. It does, though, fall a concrete slab or two short in terms of its ambition, both intellectually and imaginatively. 

It doesn't stretch or challenge the reader or use the future as a device to introduce any alarmingly new social concepts (beyond the idea of the devastating effects of global warming, evidence of which is already just a Google click away). 

In fact, I suspect if John Lanchester were to use his learned, measured, insightful mind to produce a non-fiction book about climate change, it would be a far more distressing peek into the future than his latest novel

Global warming is cost by greenhouse pollution. The effect of greenhouse pollution is an increased average temperature. The effects are: warmer days, rising sea levels, more frequent and intense extreme weather and oceans are warming and acidifying. This causes a negative effect on natural ecosystems. For example, densification, the shrinking of the polar ice caps, wildfires and the dying of coral riefs because of the warming of the water. These effects create a vicious cycle effecting mor and more animal and planted populations as well as human who are dependent on these ecosystems in order to survive.

The Paris Agreement is an international agreement on the climate change. The Agreement was adopted by 196 Parties in Paris, on 12 December 2015. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The counties with the highest emission of carbon dioxide, is China with 10.06 GT. The second country is Amerika with 5.41 GT and the third country is India with 2.65 GT.

The efforts of the European countries to reduce Carbon dioxide emissions are to at least reduce 55% of the emissions.

Fridays for Future movement is an international movement of school students who are fighting for the climate change and that political leaders take actions in their policies. The leader of the movement is an 18-year-old girl from Sweden who was sitting, every Friday in front of the Swedish Ministry of Health.
