At Boothroyd Primary Academy children have a curriculum written especially for them where they learn to sing, listen to, perform and compose music. They have the opportunity to learn many musical instruments in their journey through school including ocarina, recorder, ukulele, keyboard, glockenspiel, Samba drums, African drums and hand percussion instruments.

Ukulele club runs on a Tuesday after school from 3.20pm to 4.10pm every week and is for children from year 3 to year 6.

Singing Club runs on a Thursday after school from 3.20pm to 4.10pm. It is for children from year 3 to 6, no audition required. Children attend many events throughout the year including Young Voices, Mrs Sunderland workshop and Kirklees Primary Music Festival.

Hand percussion

In EYFS children sing and experiment with making different sounds on musical instruments as part of the in provision learning.

Ocarina

Year 1 learn how to read simple music notation and how to write it. They sing every lesson and learn how to play the ocarina. This introduces the concept of pitch, high and low sounds. They also build their listening skills and begin to describe music in simple terms.

Recorder

Year 2 learn how to read music notation and write a two to four bar rhythm. They sing every lesson and learn to play the recorder. They also build their listening skills, describing music in terms of dynamics, tempo and instruments.

Ukulele

Year 3 learn how to read music notation and chords for ukulele. They sing every lesson and learn to play the ukulele as a class. They learn basic chords and strumming patterns. The children develop their listening skills and knowledge of music by commenting in more detail about the musical elements and character of music.

Keyboard

Year 4 learn how to read and write pitch on the stave. They sing songs that have different parts and harmonies. Their music lessons focus on learning to play the keyboard. They also learn how to describe music in terms of musical elements and instruments and the character of the music.

Samba

The final unit is Samba Drumming. Year 5 learn how to play syncopated rhythms and layer rhythms when playing different instruments as a class. They learn about Samba instruments and Carnival. Year 5 put together a class performance of several samba songs and work in groups to perform a composition of their own.

Glockenspiel - homophonic texture

Year 6 begin the year by learning about homophonic texture by playing glockenspiels in different parts as a class. They develop their singing skills learning to sing in harmony and with expression and confidence. Students listen to music from different musical eras, describing instruments, atmosphere and comparing music from different genres.

African Drumming

African drumming is a hugely popular unit for year 6 where they learn about music from across Africa. They learn to play in a group and lead an ensemble with call and response and polyrhythms. Year 6 compose their own ostinati rhythms.

Boothroyd Singing club practises hard throughout the Autumn Term to take part in Young Voices at Sheffield Arena in February. This is a fantastic opportunity to sing with thousands of other children in a giant concert in one of our biggest arenas.

Garage Band - Structure in music

Year 5 use the ipads to compose music on Garage Band in a unit that teaches the children about musical structure. They experiment with different tracks and combinations of sounds to create piece with a specific structure and learn about the different kinds of structure you might find in popular and classical music.

Movie Music

In this unit students focus on the music of John Williams. They explore how music can create atmosphere in movies and how this can be achieved. They also learn about the history of film music and how it has developed. Students use the ipads to create a piece of music on Garage Band to go with a movie scene, composing for a purpose. They also learn songs for their year 6 show!

Keyboard continued

Year 5 continue learning new skills on the keyboard including playing chords, playing in different parts with a partner and composing using music notation. They learn to sing in different parts and in harmony and how to use detailed vocabulary to describe music.

Chinese Music

Year 4 learn about Chinese music and Chinese New Year. They learn how to compose a Chinese inspired piece on pentatonic notes on the keyboard.

This is an opportunity for children to showcase their talents and audition to be in a final show to be the winner of Boothroyd's Got Talent! This event is usually in the Spring Term.

At the end of the Autumn Term children from year 1 to 6 perform in a concert to parents to showcase all the fantastic things they have been learning in music lessons and music clubs.

Kirklees Primary Music Festival. Children from singing club attend this festival in June/July where they perform with other schools from Kirklees in a fantastic concert with live musicians.

Indian Music

Year 5 learn about Indian Classical Music and instruments and play and compose a Raga and Tala in groups.

Big Sing

14 year 2 students were taken to Dewsbury Town Hall on the 6th November to sing in the Musica Kirklees Big Sing. All the children in year 2 learned the songs for this event. They had fun singing about Autumn and Bears with live musicians. Several local schools were involved and there were around 300 children participating. Well done year 2!

Rhythm and experimenting with sound.

Year 1 begin the year learning to play simple rhythms and patterns on percussion instruments and learn to read simple music notation. They experiment with the different sounds they can make on the instruments and play loud and soft and fast and slow rhythms. They learn about graphic score, music notation and begin to put sounds together to form their own compositions.

Year 6 end of year show

This event showcases year 6 as they come to the end of their time at Boothroyd in the summer term. A truly fantastic event and a chance for year 6 to show off their acting, singing and teamwork skills.
