The biggest similarity is the subject matter. For Chaim Soutine the carcass was inspired personally by the earlier works of Rembrandt.

Both Soutine and Rembrandt painted the carcass as a psychological study of humanity through personal times of challenges and despair. Soutine suffered much despair through religious persecution. Rembrandt, who was famous and wealthy, squandered his savings where he suffered from personal tragedy and financial hardships.

Both paintings are painted with impasto, heavy paint application, with careful and similar anatomical attention to calling out the inner depths of the cavity within the body of the carcass.

Soutine paints in an expressionistic modality where the carcass is seen as floating in the air. His paint application is thick with impasto and brushwork; a method of self-expression where he filtered his angst from religious persecution.

Soutine focus is on color, texture, movement, and abstraction. Rembrandt has an acute method of perspective and chiaroscuro through a limited pallet. The Soutine painting has a mix of depth and flatness.

Rembrandt has a focus on the anatomical study with the carcass seen as having been recently butchered, showing the daily life. IT has been noted that this painting by Rembrandt has a biblical quality to it; the killing of the fatted calf in the 'Prodigal Son.'

"Once I saw the village butcher [in his youth, in Russia] slice the neck of a bird and drain the blood out of it. I wanted to cry out, but his joyful expression caught the sound in my throat.. .This cry, I always feel it there. When, as a I drew a crude portrait of my professor, I tried to rid myself of this cry, but in vain. When I painted the beef carcass it was still this cry that I wanted to liberate. I have still not succeeded."

Soutine's painting style resonates with me by the way that he makes marks. He uses bright and vibrant colors with lot's of overlap of brushstrokes. I can feel the emotional power of his work through his color selection and paint application. On the other hand, Rembrandt is such a master of chiaroscuro, the study of dark and light. His ability to create life like forms in a limited color pallet is intriguing to me. He is especially masterful at creating depth of space. I am encouraged to push limits of depth perception by with limited colors in order to create a muted use of light.
