Weight IAT Results

Reflection:
My result of this test is that I have no automatic preference between fat people and thin people. This result didn’t surprise me and it was also influenced by my upbringing. Both of my parents and many other members of my family were overweight at some point in their lives. My mom and dad specifically have both worked to lose weight in order to improve their overall health in the last couple of years. As someone who has always struggled to maintain a healthy weight, I don’t associate weight and worth. A person, thin or fat, doesn’t lose value because of a number on the scale. It is important for me as a future counselor to understand the many different factors that feed into weight. I know that this lesson that weight doesn't equal value will be important when working with teenage girls. I have seen many examples of how society’s view of weight can influence a young woman in a negative way. I hope to combat those potentially negative habits by teaching them that weight and value are not correlated.

Gender-Career IAT Results

Reflection:
Overall, I moderately relate males with careers and females with family. I know that this has to do with my upbringing. My mother is an educator and my father has always had an 8 am to 5 pm job. My mom enjoyed the afternoons, summers, and school holidays with my brother and I while my dad worked longer hours and had less holidays. This experience has led me to relate women to family life rather than career. I recognize this bias will affect my counseling ability when trying to match female students and career paths. To combat this, I will first be aware of my bias and then encourage female students to explore all possible career paths, not just family life.

Core Beliefs

Students will be what teachers and counselors expect them to be. For example, if a teacher has been warned about a student’s behavior from a previous teacher and expects that student to misbehave, the student more than likely will. Students have the unique ability to identify who in the school believes in them. That being said, all students deserve someone to fight for and believe in them. Students feel empowered when adults treat them with respect and fairness. The ASCA Mindset standards clearly states that all counselors should believe that “Every student can learn, and every student can succeed” (ASCA, 2019, p. 6) Counselors and teachers have to believe this statement. Students always deserve to be treated with respect and fairness. These two factors will lead to student achievement.
