During the Civil War, there was a white supremacy in this country and black Americans were discriminated and treated very cruelly. This monument depicts that in those times people believed that certain races or people were "ranked" higher than others. The Civil Rights Movement led by many freedom riders was a historic event for America and was a major turning point for the freedom and equality for all. Still in today's society, there is many race brutality and many African-Americans are still treated harshly. To conclude, during the Civil War, the relationship between black and white community was very toxic where the white community believed that black people were not at the same level as them, and they could own black men. I infer that the people who made this monument wanted people viewing the monument to focus their attention on Teddy Roosevelt. When I look at the monument, the first question that comes to my mind is why are the 2 men on the side lower than the man in the middle. I realized that this is because each person in the monument was put there for a reason. The two men are lower because it is trying to show the supremacy of white men during the Civil War. I don't know how the people who are related or can relate to these monuments, but I have a deep feeling of sadness for them.
