Monetary Policy and Fixed Capital Formation

The annual growth rate of fixed capital formation declined in the United States during the second half of 2015. But in developing countries such as Brazil there was the sharpest contraction in fixed capital formation during the second half of 2015. While central bank policy rates declined sharply in most the world economy, the policy level only has a limited impact on the growth rate of fixed capital formation. Unconventional monetary policy measures taken by major central banks since the onset of the global financial crisis have succeeded in easing liquidity constraints in the financial system, driving up asset prices and returning corporate and household balance sheets. The 2016 World Economic Situation and Prospects highlights the relationship between the fall in fixed capital formation and declining productivity trends during the post-crisis period. While productivity growth has begun to fall before the global financial crisis, especially in the United States, the decline in productivity growth has become more pro-nouncing with the near collapse of fixed investment starting in 2009

Florent
Torino
Dwika
Novia
Fahran
Kathya

As a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, globalization is considered by some as a form of capitalist expansion which entails the integration of local and national economies into a global, unregulated market economy. Meaning, its easier to connect and communicate with others, there will be more opportunity, less boundaries in the market and with less boundaries also comes a new source of competition. Globalization affects markets of three kinds: commodities, labor, and assets&debts.

When we talk about commodities, the first thing that comes to our mind is good and services of all varieties. The relation between good and services with globalization is financial trade. As we mention before, globalization is closely related to a revolution in connection and communications. The communications revolution makes transactions easy, fast, and cheap. No movements of physical goods or of people are involved. No frontiers have to be crossed. The only barriers are national regulations.

Globalization is a fashionable word to describe trends perceived to be dramatically and relentlessly increasing connections and communications among people regardless of nationality and geography.Trades of financial assets are the easiest to globalize. Despite the apparent pace of recent financial globalization and its spectacular technological support, it is in fact nothing new. Nostalgia for the gold standard is understandable, but it is misplaced. In the 1920s and 1930s it was disastrous. The worldwide system of exchange rates agreed at Bretton Woods was a sort of gold standard. Every member of the International Monetary Fund set the gold content of its currency.

Globalization is something that has been with the human race ever since the world has begun. From local to global, we could attribute this to the result of human innovation and technological progress. Globalization from the world global means spreading throughout the world, in other words spreading world-wide. The aims of having a ‘globalized’ community is to have interdependence of the entire world and its people from each other with concern for the rest of the world at the expense of national self-development and sef-interest.

Globalization also affects the economy of the world. Let’s talk about how globalization affects the capital market. Because of the human innovation and technological progress, capital market runs easier, cheaper and more effective than before. It does not requires us to travel into places or sending a paper of money or anything into places which will cost a lot of time. Now it all goes virtual, we can send funding capital only by our gadget. Because of this, it raise the interdependence of the entire world and its people.

Once considered more of a back-end, data center processing platform, FinTech has in recent years come to be known as the basis for end-to-end processing of transactions over the Internet via cloud services. After the global financial crisis of 2008, however, FinTech has evolved to disrupt and reshape commerce, payments, investment, asset management, insurance, clearance and settlement of securities and even money itself with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

The film shows us how advance and sophisticated artificial intelligence will be in the future. And to test those quality, turing test is needed. But Ex machina shows that the turing test alone is not enough to test that. So what exactly is turing test and why it’s not enough?

Turing test is developed by legendary computer scientist Alan Turing,it’s a test to prove AI in a machine. Basically when a human interacts with a computer and if the human doesn’t know they’re interacting with a computer the test is passed. Or in another word, turing test is a way to prove whether or not AI has their own consciousness. Usually in the turing test, the machine should be hidden from the examiner. But in ex machina, they proceed turing test differently by not hiding AI from the examiner so the examiner is not just allowed to hear the AI’s voice but also see directly that it’s really a robot talking to him.

In practice,it turns out that doing the turing test alone is not as helpful as we want it to be. AI’s final turing score can also fabricated by the programmers just like the chatbot case that pretend to be a 13 year old boy and convinced 33% of judges panel it was human when in fact it’s a fraud. Or we can say that the AI is programmed to trick the judges in order to get a decent turing score. No matter an AI’s final turing test score, a script built to imitate human conversation or recognize patterns isn’t something the scientists would describe as being truly intelligent and a way to show that AI have their own consciousness.

The heroine of Alex Garland’s Ex Machina has sharp blue eyes, an even, inquisitive voice and skin so clear it seems to soften the air around it. She’s also a robot, pieced together by a reclusive genius in a house shrouded by mountains, and her thought processes are sparked by the terms millions of humans are keying into Blue Book, the world’s most popular internet search engine.

If Ava, who’s played by AVA, looks at you like she knows your most deeply felt desires, it’s because we’ve already told them to her – during our lunch breaks, in illicit, snatched moments while we’re supposed to be working, and by the pale blue glow of our smartphones last thing at night. Garland’s science-fiction chamber piece – his first film as director, and fifth as screenwriter, after 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd – starts from the premise that no one knows us better than our internet browsers, then turns that queasy intimacy inside out. Ex Machina whips up the same kind of existential terror Mary Shelley harnessed almost exactly 200 years ago in frankenstein, but for a time in which the flow of information holds the same world-conquering potential that the flow of electricity once did.

Ex Machina's film is a collaboration film between Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander after the film Anna Karenina. The film was released at BFI Southbank on January 21, 2015 and released in the United States on April 10, 2015 on a limited basis and 24 April 2015 widely.

Programmer Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), who works for the dominant search engine company, Blue Book, bought office contests for visits to the luxury and purchased CEO's house, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). He developed an artificial intelligent robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander) and he wanted Caleb to prove that he had his own consciousness. Of course, they were both very aware that the Turing test alone would not be enough.

what is a touring test? The Turing Test is a test intended to prove artificial intelligence in a machine. This test was developed by legendary computer scientist Alan Turing. Turing tests involve natural language conversations between machines and humans made through messages typed from separate rooms. A machine is considered a living being if it manages to convince humans that it is also human; that it can "think." Since it was developed, there have been claims from several AI trials that have successfully passed the Turing test. However, when checked, this result was found invalid. Just last year, a chatbot pretending to be a 13-year-old boy convinced 33 percent of the judges that it was human - effectively crossing the Turing test threshold with a 30 percent confidence level.

Avengers: Endgame Director Reveals How Massive Actor Salaries Affected the Movie

Kofi Outlaw

05/01/2019

Avengers: Endgame is earning crazy money at the worldwide box office - but apparently, it had to spend quite a bit of money to make that money. In a new breakdown of Avengers: Endgame by the film's directors, The Russo Bros., It was revealed that one of the biggest challenges to making both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame was actually finding the money to pay the massive cast of the films!

In talking with THR, Anthony Russo discusses the high cost of paying some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe biggest (read: most expensive) stars for the Infinity War / Endgame production - as well as the list of big stars that made cameos in either or both films:

Anthony Russo: "It was a huge financial issue on this one, and really the way it manifested for us was the fact that we shot these movies back-to-back. The primary motivation to shoot these movies back-to-back like this and to block them was so that we could condense actors' work so we were basically buying them for a little more than one movie rather than two full movies. Marvel and Disney were able to structure deals with the actors because we were economizing their time commitment by blocking the movies this way. That was the only reason to shoot these movies this way. Of course, there was a huge creative upside for Joe and I, in that we got to tell a story with all these characters and all these wonderful actors. Everything else about blocking these movies together is a downside. It was really difficult. Each of these movies was the most difficult, complex movie we've ever made individually and to do them back-to-back together was a really daunting task."

There's a lot of implication packed into that quote, once you start to unpack it. First: while the scheduling of Infinity War and Endgame's productions were seemingly done to accommodate the cast schedules, it also allowed Disney to cut the cost of actor salaries down to essentially one big film production, instead of two. Second, for all the success The Russos are enjoying in light of Endgame's release, the undertaking clearly took a lot out of them - arguably too much. The stress of directing a movie is already a massive toll on most directors - taking on two of the biggest blockbuster films of all time would be an unthinkable strain.

Still, with the work and effort now behind them, it's safe to say that Marvel fans all over the world are more than thrilled with the great sacrifice that the Russo Bros. made. It's equally true that the Russo Bros. will likely end up looking fondly on this big life struggle, as Infinity War and Endgame's respective and collective success will like buy the Russos any kind of career they want, going forward.

After watching a phenomenal film or a film that is popular with many people ranging from children to adults, sometimes some people can not bear to tell or discuss the plot and ending of the film. So, How Long Should You Wait Before Discussing the Spoiler?

In my opinion, it is time to tell or discuss films that are much loved, such as from MCU, Avengers: Endgame is one week or 2 weeks. According to Seitz For new movies, like Avengers: Endgame, says it's ok to discuss it after just a week. But it's different for the Game of Thrones movie. Seitz says you should wait 48 hours before discussing TV shows like GOT, one week for new movies and 4 days for Netflix binge series like 'House of Cards' before it's a game fair to let your thumbs unleash your stockpile of spoilers online.

There are a best ways to avoid spoilers. firstly, acceptance is key. Unless you literally lock yourself in an empty room and avoid human contact, there will always be a chance you will see a spoiler. And then, of course, there's the obvious solution, you can always just take a short break from social media. Avoid the internet. If you're that bothered about spoilers, get on board with the fact that if you don't want to see people talking about something insanely popular, don't go on the very place where they're talking about it.

A spoiler is a bad thing. Internet networks already exist in several places throughout the world. to access the network we do not need to worry because there is already a technology that makes it easier for us to access the internet network, namely routers and modems. and what is the difference between the two?

Router is a computer network hardware that functions to send data packets over the network or the internet from one computer device to another, where the process is called routing. Each device in the network is given an Internet protocol (IP) address to connect 2 or more networks in order to distributing data packages from one network to another

Modem is a hardware device that has a function to change 2 signals so that receiving and sending messages can work well. not only that, modems have other functions such as, the device for converting digital signals into analog signals, connecting devices with networks, do the modulation and demodulation process, do check data and communication, do compression of data sent via signal. Modems have 5 types, namely external, internal, ISDN, GSM and analog. Even though it has 5 different types, all modem functions are the same.

the difference is A router creates a network within your home for your devices; the modem gives that network access to the Internet. So if you are reading this on a device that is connected to Wifi, that means you are connected to a wireless network set up by your router. And your router is accessing the Internet through your modem.

Internet network already exists and can be accessed properly. so we don't need to be afraid if we need something that needs to be accessed through the internet and we don't have to fear our internet network is slow because the router and modem can be used and found everywhere

https://flipboard.com/topic/internet/this-is-the-difference-between-a-router-and-a-modem/a-Yh1_07K8R4CZxZ5ZE-he_A%3Aa%3A179087245-ad4bcd147a/familyhandyman.com

Maroons
Putri
Nisa
Rachel
Nadhifa
Absharina(aina)

The Surprising Truth About Meal Kits

Blue apron is an American meal kit service that deliver all the ingredients needed based on recipe. So you’ll get the exact amount of ingredients you needed. With that being said, the items will come individually packaged in plastic bags or clamshells. This app got a lot of criticism because it creates an excessive packaging waste. However, while blue apron has some flaws, it can be argued that this app will result in more positive impacts than negative. So what exactly is blue apron, what is the positive impacts and why the positive impacts can outweigh the negatives?

Blue apron is an application that can make it easier for us to service food ingredients and recipes in America. The application contains ingredients that we will need for cooking and also includes recipes suggested by Blue Apron. Food ingredients also have good quality and fresh without being mixed with chemicals. The recipe is also a recipe suggested by Blue Apron according to the food we buy. Recipes are designed by chefs with clear instructions step by step. Not only America has an application like that, Indonesia also has an application that is no less powerful than the Blue Apron, Sayur Box.

The positive impacts from using blue apron is that we can reduce food waste. Why is that? Its because the app provide you to buy the ingredients based on recipe so you will get only the amount of food you need. It seems reasonable that many meal kits, by providing only the amounts of food you need, cut down on overall waste. You're less likely to throw out potatoes that went bad because you never use them, if you only have the exact amount you need and the right direction on what you need to do.

The positive impacts can outweigh the negative is mainly because it's not the packaging that matters most. It's food waste and transportation logistics that cause the most important differences in the environmental impacts of these two delivery mechanisms. The researchers found that the excessive packaging was a trade-off compared to the benefits that come with subscription meals services like Blue Apron. Even though the excessive packaging is incredibly bad for the environment, that extra chicken breast bought from the grocery store that gets freezer-burned and finally gets thrown out is much worse, because of all the energy and materials that had to go into producing that chicken breast in the first place.

So, using a meal kit service like blue apron can make our life easy. But we really want to have people to think beyond just what their automatic gut reaction in terms of whether a product is good or bad for the environment. Yes plastic is bad, but it's not necessarily the whole environmental story. To understand the actual environmental impacts, we need to look at the whole system.

But despite the grime, a population of Gulf killifish have managed to evolve resistance to the otherwise lethal pollution. Genetic sequences revealed that the fish have integrated a small bit of DNA from another species of fish, the Atlantic killifish. These results show the extreme luck and difficulty required for animals to adapt to environments changed quickly by humans.

In order to survive humans, “you need to be a superstar in terms of genetic diversity and need to be super lucky,” study author Andrew Whitehead, associate professor at the University of California, Davis, told Gizmodo. “That doesn’t bode well for most species we care about conserving.”

Atlantic killifish

Photo: Andrew Whitehead

The researchers captured killifish from 12 increasingly polluted sites along the Houston Shop Channel and in Galveston Bay. They had the fish spawn in a laboratory and tested how the embryos fared against a pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyl. Fish from the most polluted sites could withstand concentrations 1,000 times higher than normally harmful levels, according to the paper published in Science.

But the incredible realization of how this fish evolved its pollution resistance came from genetic testing. A pair genes from the pollutant-resistant Gulf killifish, including a segment with deleted DNA that seemed to account for the resistance, appeared to come directly from another species, the Atlantic killifish. The researchers estimated that this little bit of genetic material entered the Gulf killifish’s gene pool no more than 34 generations ago, after a Gulf killifish hybridized with an Atlantic killifish.

You might be thinking, oh, that’s not so surprising; they’re both killifish in the same ocean. But that’s not really what’s happening. “These fish are the size of your thumb and can’t swim very far,” Whitehead explained. “They’ve got a small home range and they’re not a migratory fish. A fish you catch in a marsh was probably born within a hundred meters or so.”

The mystery, now, is how the fish managed to make it from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf of Mexico. “We can only speculate,” said Whitehead. “It was almost certainly human assisted. These fish aren’t capable of swimming around the straits of Florida.” Perhaps an Atlantic killifish was scooped up in a ship’s ballast water and dumped into Galveston Bay.

Embryo from a non-pollutant-resistant (left) versus pollutant-resistant (right) population, after exposure to pollution. The embryo on the right is faring better.

Other researchers were impressed by the paper. “This was really solid,” Michi Tobler, associate professor at Kansas State University, told Gizmodo. “This story builds on some decades worth of research. They really capitalized that, and very explicitly tested a hypothesis. I thought that was really neat. They sequenced a lot of genomes.”

Tobler, too, was “flabbergasted” about how this could actually happen. While the ballast water explanation made sense, he wanted to see how common this sort of evolution via hybridization event is in polluted waters around the world.

Don’t get the idea that hybridization is always beneficial, though. It can also threaten some species with extinction, Karin Pfennig wrote in a commentary for Science.

Does Asking Alexa Actually Save Time? An Investigation

Thursday 2:35PM

Your takeaway might be the old “life finds away,” or even “evolution is the solution to pollution.” But this isn’t really what’s going on here, explained Whitehead. Without an unlikely stroke of luck, Gulf killifish might have been completely killed out of the Houston Ship Channel. And far more species are dying out than getting lucky.

“Many of the species we care about are in big trouble when it comes to the pace and severity of environmental change and climate change,” Whitehead said. It’s unrealistic to rely on luck or even genetic engineering to maintain the species that humans care about, and other species more generally. “What’s feasible is to change our behavior as a species.”

This Fish Has Evolved to Thrive in Intensely Polluted Water

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances often chemicals or microorganisms contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment. A small fish somehow evolved resistance to the heavily polluted water of the Houston Ship Channel by mysteriously acquiring genes from another fish from thousands of miles away. The researchers wanted to see how common this sort of evolution via hybridization event is in polluted waters around the world. Unfortunately hybridization is quite dangerous.

Genetic sequences revealed that the fish have integrated a small bit of DNA from another species of fish, the Atlantic killifish. These results show the extreme luck and difficulty required for animals to adapt to environments changed quickly by humans. The researchers captured killifish from 12 increasingly polluted sites along the Houston Shop Channel and in Galveston Bay. They had the fish spawn in a laboratory and tested how the embryos fared against a pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyl. Fish from the most polluted sites could withstand concentrations 1,000 times higher than normally harmful levels. And then, the researchers estimated that this little bit of genetic material entered the Gulf killifish’s gene pool no more than 34 generations ago, after a Gulf killifish hybridized with an Atlantic killifish.

This phenomenon makes researchers interested in conducting research through hybridization events. Hybridization is the interbreeding between animals or plants of different species that results in a novel offspring. Though infrequent, hybridization is a powerful driver of evolution. DNA–DNA hybridization generally refers to a molecular biology technique that measures the degree of genetic similarity between pools of DNA sequences. It is usually used to determine the genetic distance between two organisms and the DNA hybridization technique is commonly used to determine the relatedness between species and their evolutionary relationships. Although hybridization has benefits in conducting research, this still has the consequence that hybridization between different populations or species is an increasing problem because anthropogenic disturbances continue to increase the likelihood of mixing between previously isolated groups of genes that can result in the extinction of several species.

The researchers can use hybridization techniques to conduct their research, but this is not an effective way to do it often and researchers are expected to use other techniques that are safer for the species. In addition, to preserve the environment, all people must maintain their behavior towards nature.

Otniel
Helena
Rafid
Andre
Benedictus

The Best Player In The World And A 3-0 Deficit Couldn’t Stop Liverpool

By Terrence Doyle

Liverpool needed to do it all against Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal on Tuesday. Despite creating chances, the Reds had failed to score in the first leg at Camp Nou last week, which meant they faced a 3-0 deficit going into Tuesday’s second leg at home against Lionel Messi’s squad. To advance to the final, Liverpool needed to score four times and prevent Barcelona — a team that possesses the best player in the world and one of the most potent attacks in Europe — from scoring what would likely be a decisive away goal.

The Reds managed to do both — and now they can sit back and wait for their opponent in the final on June 1 in Madrid.

To be clear, beating Messi and Barcelona by any margin in any game is a difficult task — ask any player in La Liga how it usually goes — but doing so in a Champions League semifinal, and without the help of injured forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, seemed damn near impossible.

Before the game began, the FiveThirtyEight Soccer Power Indexagreed, giving Liverpool just a 7 percent chance to advance to the final. The model gave Barcelona a 93 percent chance to advance and a 61 percent chance to grab Europe’s top silverware. The odds to win the final have now swung precipitously in Liverpool’s favor: It has a 72 percent chance to take home the trophy if it plays Tottenham Hotspur and a 68 percent chance if it plays the Dutch club Ajax. The Reds’ only complaint now is that they can’t play the final at Anfield.

Despite the lopsided scoreline during the first leg between Liverpool and Barcelona, there was evidence that there wasn’t a significant gulf in class between them. The Reds took more total shots, made more passes inside the attacking third, made more passes inside their opponent’s penalty area, completed more total passes, whipped more crosses into the box and completed more tackles than Messi’s men. While a historic comeback was unlikely, Liverpool had certainly shown it was capable of hanging with Barca.

If the soccer gods were against Liverpool in the first leg — that Salah strike that rattled off the post late into the match suggested they might be — they were very much chugging pints on Merseyside on Tuesday. Liverpool got off to a quick start as Divock Origi scored off a rebound in the seventh minute. The early goal was crucial: Instead of marauding in search of an away goal that would have essentially ended the semifinal dead in its tracks, Barcelona looked shaken. They managed to get to halftime without conceding a second — and indeed almost got a much-coveted away goal deep into stoppage time — but it was clear the occasion was getting to them. Barcelona’s impotence allowed Liverpool to do the very, very unlikely and get three goals in the second half — two from substitute Georginio Wijnaldum and another from Origi.

Barcelona had more of the ball in the second leg, but the Blaugrana weren’t able to cash in when they got into dangerous spaces. They created just two big chances to Liverpool’s five, and aside from a couple of half-chances, Messi was uncharacteristically quiet. He took five shots, with just two of them on target, while never really troubling Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker. While an act of Messi magic changed the equation at the Camp Nou last week, the only magic on display by Barcelona at Anfield was a disappearing act.

Messi, soccer’s GOAT, has to endure yet another setback in a career that’s been defined as much by heartbreak as it has been by brilliance. And Liverpool will move on — no matter how miraculously — to play in a second-consecutive Champions League final.
___________________________________________________

Liverpool must exert all its capabilities in the second uefa champions league semifinal meeting against Barcelona FC. 3-0 defeat of the Reds, Liverpool's nickname, in the first meeting caused the Reds need at least four goals without reply. this is not something easy because Barcelona FC has Lionel Messi, one of the world's best players, and is the most dangerous team on the attack side.

Liverpool are not considered, judged to only have a 7% chance of qualifying for the final match by one of the football observers playing confidently and pressing from the start. As a result, the Reds were able to create a goal through Orgi's divock which made use of the rebound ball in the 7th minute. The quick goal created by Liverpool made the players of FC Barcelona mentally depressed. In the second half, Liverpool included his midfielder, Gregory Wijnaldum to increase attack power. As a result, Liverpool were able to add 2 goals through Wijnaldum in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Liverpool, who continued to press FC Barcelona, were finally able to turn things around in the 78th minute through origi divock. Liverpool became the first team to qualify from the semifinals with a three-goal deficit in the first game.

in this match, Liverpool played well and the discipline was inversely proportional to FC Barcelona. Liverpool is almost superior to every statistic that exists. liverpool shot more, put more pressure on the opponent's area, made more passes in the opponent's penalty box, made more successful passes, and carried out more tackles. while Lionel messi and his troops were only able to win possession without being able to carry out dangerous attacks. they were only able to make 2 shots towards the goal. Different from the first game, magic from messi is not seen at anfield stadium, livepool's home.

Messi, the world's best player, again suffered a big blow in his football career. whereas Liverpool who is able to play nicely and discipline, is finally able to step into the UEFA Champions League final in an extraordinary way.
