Yessica Neri Romo - Civil War Causes Assessment by YESSICA NERI ROMO (4193075)

Cycles of conflict and cooperation regarding slavery contributed to the eventual secession of the southern states because in almost every situation one side blamed the other, since they always blamed the other party the people started to believe them which led to more tension between them and furthered the divide between the north and the south.

Dred Scott Decision (1857)

The Dred Scott Case was a supreme court case arguing the freedom of Dred Scott and his family. After living in multiple free states Dred Scott and his wife wanted freedom from Irene Sandford, but she refused which led to the Scott family filing lawsuits against her. After many years of multiple trials, eventually reaching the Supreme Court, the Scott family had lost and continued being enslaved. This fits into the cycle of conflict because as a result of the case, many abolitionists became enraged because of the outcome and motivated many of them to speak out and fight for what's right. This was obviously the opposite of what the southern states wanted so this irritated them and only gave them more reasons to secede.

John Brown's Raid (1859)

John Brown’s raid was a brief attempt to rile up the enslaved people to fight against their owners in now West Virginia. John Brown had been tired of the unjust and unfair treatment towards the enslaved people so he wanted to plan something that would encourage and inspire others to stand up for themselves. As a result, the south became stricter on the enslaved people so something like that wouldn’t happen again. Along with that, it divided the south and north because the south falsy claimed that Lincoln, the president who favored the north, supported Brown’s raid and they used that as an advantage to get people to dislike the president. This fits into the cycle of conflict because a side intentionally spread false information making the other look bad. This caused even more tension between the people and this tension is what divided, and eventually motivate the south to secede.

Bleeding Kansas (1855-1861)

Bleeding Kansas was a time in Kansas' history filled with violence and fighting. This was because it was breaking the Missouri compromise, the state was letting it up to the people to decide whether they were going to be a slave state or a free state. So as a result many people started moving to Kansas to make an effort to have the state be whatever they want and this obviously led to conflict. Just like the build up to the civil war, the people were fighting over the right to own slaves. This fits into the cycle of conflict because it had only worsened the tensions between the southern and northern states because of their views on slavery. In the end, Kansas became a free state and this didn't go along with the southern states' views so it contributed to their secession.
