I do not want to assume, but I am guessing that the white city wanted to break off from the black school system for many reasons, one of which could have been racism. I think it could partly be because they think that the students might perform better apart from the African Americans, and also because it is a way to marginalize. I think that there could be other factors that aren't racist, but just reading this it seems to be an issue of race and education, which permeates many parts of the nation.

This article gives credence the point stressed in the epilogue of The Teacher Wars, that unions are outdated and have to go. First, it shows that teacher's unions simply aren't as good and as effective as they were back in the day, and teachers are recognizing this and want to opt out. The government is recognizing this as well, as the Supreme Court has ruled in favor off these teachers who want out.

Learning comes through experiences, so trying to rush through such an immense amount of information in such a short amount of time is nearly pointless. The only skill this teaches is time efficiency.

The best way to pay teachers and ensure they have the best output, is to pay them according to their performances and results in the classroom. This would probably also eliminate such salary negotiations.

I believe that the "Fast and Furious" method that allows students to receive on full year's worth of credit for one week's worth of work is inherently flawed. It is simply unfair to ask a student to have to complete this task. The process of learning is long and it builds on itself as students gain skills and knowledge over prolonged periods of time. This week-long task is simply impossible and too much to ask of a student.

People these days believe that they can do a better job of negotiating salaries and contracts by themselves as opposed to having the union do it for them. Having the law passed, if you are not a member of the union, you do not have to pay for it is huge. This will lead more teachers to leave the union.

I definitely think "Fast and Furious" is a poor way to educate students. Getting a year's worth of credit from a week's worth of work means that students probably are not even absorbing the knowledge, and they are getting credit that most likely will not help them in the long run. If only 1 in 4 students were logging in, it shows that it is a poor system.
