In class, we looked at chapter 14 which had a lot to do with fractions. We then talked about different ways fractions could be represented and taught. This chapter stuck out to me because while I have thought about teaching things such as fractions, I did not realize how many ways to go about it there were. For example, while reading the chapter, one thing that stood out to me was the many different ways fractions can be represented. These ways include things like area models, length models, and set models. I had never been there before and it was really interesting to see that the college had a place that was so interesting off campus. In this class, we worked on the importance of good instructions. We watched a video on a man asking his children to write instructions on how to make a sandwich and then following the instructions EXACTLY, even if they were wrong. We then chose something to write instructions about. In my case it was how to make chocolate milk. We then went outside and wrote exact directions on how to get to the gazebo. We then took pictures of things involving math for our "annotating photos" assignment. This class showed me the importance of writing and creating good instructions for students to ensure their success in activities. I was very excited for this day to come and I am very glad we all went as a class. I walked there from campus, and it was an absolutely beautiful walk! When we all got there, we began experimenting with different pieces of technology that we could possibly integrate in our classroom (I only included some of the pictures because there are so many). There were things such as different LEGO robots for students to construct and then program whatever actions it is intended to do. There were also these things called Spheros. These were little balls that students could control/program to roll around the floor and do different tasks (this station was my particular favorite). There were many more stations that we went to in which were very interesting. We met with our groups and talked about this, looking over all the comments and talking about how to improve this lesson along with the lessons still to come. After this, we looked at some examples of different unit plans from student's past. We talked about how and why their standards weren't aligned and how we could fix them. Overall, today was a very enlightening class. I know now to REALLY make sure that my standards are aligned to the objectives and to just be overall more detailed with my lesson plans in the future. It was nerve racking but I believe our lesson was put together well and that we presented it well too. After that, we read sections out of chapter 18. The first section was talking about measurement. This part states different information such as students in the United States are weaker in measurement than any other topic, nonstandard units should be used for younger grades so they are able to get a hang of measurement concepts, and states many different other facts/pieces of information about measurement. We then looked at a later section about circumference and area of circles, along with making different shapes out of the fractions that come from circles. This class was nice because we were able to talk about different ways students can be taught measurement specifically. We then went on further in class to begin to talk about SMPs. The specific practices we were talking about in today's class is "constructing viable arguments" and "critiquing reasoning of others". We talked about how it is important to not let emotions get in the way of rational thinking in a viable argument & it is also important to listen to what the other person has to say in order for your argument to have any traction whatsoever. This was very fun and showed us different strategies on how we could teach students these topics. After that, we went outside and walked around the trails at the camp. This class was very relaxing and much needed. I made some cool stuff and it was a very nice way to start off the class! Next, we started talking about the concept of statistics and, more specifically, statistics vs mathematics. This time though, we talked more about "statistical analysis." We watched a video about why statistical literacy is important for students to learn. We then looked at many different graphs including ones involving solar & wind power, carbon footprint, and more. We then looked at a chart and had a conversation about the effect of different food on the environment before watching more videos on what statistical literacy is and why it is important for students to learn it. This lesson was very informative, as it made me aware of the fact that without learning statistical analysis, many students will not know how to read or interpret data at all. We used many different former student's projects. Most of them were very cute and even kind of hard to figure out for a college student! We then created an activity of our own and in my group specifically, we used the magnetic money to teach students about the different values of money. I was very glad to have played around with some different activities and it reminds me of why I would like to become a teacher. I cannot wait to create projects like these for the students in my class and I hope they have as much fun with them as I did when I was in school. If there isn't one of those types of groups in my future school, I am definitely going to form one for myself. After these videos, we talked about the different types of rubrics (analytic, holistic, single-point) and their different applications in different situations. Today could be considered a "content heavy" day but I liked it! We had bagels again and they were so good. We then began an activity in which we built a tiny house. This activity was very fun and all of us at the table were talking about different ideas for things we could have in our tiny houses. They all seemed to be turning out really well! We then took a walk around the camp to take a break from the project, came back and continued working. This type of project was fun for us as college students, so I can only imagine it would be fun for younger students as well. It allows them to use their imagination and be hands on, as well as having them follow instructions.
