A new interesting mean to share episodes of sexual violence or abuse is represented by social media. For example recently a trend has gone viral about the mythological character Medusa, who has become the symbol of survivors to this type of violence. According to one of the many interpretations, originally Medusa was a beautiful woman that is sexually abused by Poseidon and then transformed by Athena into a frightening snake-haired monster. Therefore Medusa represents a double victim: of violence and of society, which doesn’t help the victims but blames them. Acts of 🤬 are in fact often justified by the clothing: as in the video that we saw, the first question to be asked in these cases is “what were you wearing?”, without the awareness that the problem is not in the clothes but in men’s attitudes.

Our discourse about gender equality must therefore be intersectional: we should not underestimate the problems we face in our daily life, such as the fear of walking alone at night but, on the other hand, we must also address issues such as the inability of  walking alone anywhere, school included (when they are allowed to attend it). Collaboration, solidarity and sisterhood should be the pillars of this fight since, in my opinion, individual liberation translates into nothing but joining the oppressors’ table. I think, in fact, that what should be broken is the idea of having to fulfill a specific image and role in society based on the gender, which is what causes numerous forms of discriminations. Just think about the huge absence of women in some specific fields and jobs, such as  leadership positions (especially in politics) or jobs STEM related.  Women have to face more difficulties during their career path: from 2013 to 2016,in Italy, more than four hundred thousand women were victims of sexual exploitation at the workplace. Violence is used in order to blackmail  about losing the employment or as a possibility for having a    promotion, for achieving higher positions. 
In conclusion, achieving gender equality should be a priority, in order to progress and to make the world safe for every human being.

Certainly we have made some progress: now women can vote, they can have a job (at least in our country). So, from a formal point of view, women and men have the same rights, so why is gender equality still present in the agenda 2030? Because actually women are not as free, but there is still prejudice. Men believe that woman are not as capable as them: the number of women in parliament is very low compared to that of men. Most of the companies are managed by men, the most important scientists or writers are men. The few women who try to became famous, to make a career are usually mocked and they are often the object of sexual abuse.
