When Martin Luther was younger, unlike most, he was able to receive a good education. He went to school to become a lawyer but after certain events he became a monk by the age of 23. He was a dedicated priest of a Roman Catholic Church.

30 Years War

The 30 Years War was a war between Catholics and Protestants during 1618-1648. It began in Bohemia and was ruled by the Hapsburgs. The protestants there received religious toleration.

95 Theses

Martin Luther thought that the Catholic Church needed to be reformed. He wrote the 95 Theses which included the problems he thought the Church had. After finishing the 95 Theses, Martin Luther nailed it to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 with the purpose of spreading Catholic beliefs around the world. If someone wanted to join, they would have to undergo years of training and follow a strict code of discipline. They also set up schools that taught Catholic ideology.
