I think the message, "You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head but you can keep them from nesting in your hair" means you can keep yourself away from sadness, but you can't keep them for happening. That's what I think the meaning of "You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them for nesting in your hair."

I think the quote means that you can't help getting sad, but you shouldn't let the reason you're sad overwhelm you. For example, when Phoebe was very sad and upset about her mother leaving she only focused on that.

Based on the article, this message means you can't keep sad things from happening, but you can keep them from getting you mad, angry, paranoid and awfully hurt inside. For example, Phoebe couldn't keep sad things from happening to her but she could keep them from getting to her and destroying all her happiness.

I think the quote means that you shouldn't let the sad memories stay in your head,instead you should keep the happy memories and remember the fun and great memories that you had with your loved ones(mom dad brother sister aunt uncle grandma grandpa and much more). Also, it's better that you don't remember the sad memories because it will kind of haunt you and you won't get back to your life. This is what I think the quote means.
