Roderick seems lonely, especially because his last relative would pass away soon and the living conditions of his sister add to his emotions, it is a very gloomy and depressing house. Madeline is the sister of Roderick usher. Madeline is extremely ill and she has a bitterness that can never be forgotten. Madeline appears to look almost like a ghost. Madeline doesn't acknowledge anyone's presence and just passes slowly through a remote portion of the house. Roderick is baffled by her presence and he describes her as “ a settled apathy, a gradual, wasting away of a person”. (pg. 326) For several days her name was unmentioned by Roderick and the narrator. Madeline returns to her bedroom where later Roderick believes she is dead. Roderick also suffers from a severe illness and he mourns the death of his sister. Madeline who appears from the dead is a manifestation of Rodericks worst fears. 
Before Rodrick started singing he talked about the House of Usher. He is comparing the song called "The Haunted Palace " to his own house. He sings the song and we hear "Once a fair stately place..." (Pg.328) Talking about how the house of Usher was once a place that flourished and was a nice environment. He also states, "The ruler of the realm was seen..." (Pg. 328) Maybe he was talking about his father, and how he was the man of the house and how everything was nice and peaceful when he was around. Another part of the song is, " But evil things, in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarch's high estate."
