Walter has a contradicting character, where he dreams of creating a business capable of supporting his family, yet he is being pressured to keep his family values which proves to be challenging when Walter is unable to do both. He ends up finding that his family is more important than business and lets go of his dream of owning a liquor store to fulfill his family’s dream and move into the new home, and even though he was happy with his decision, his dream still didn’t come true.

In the end, Mama gives Walter the opportunity to speak for the family and he decides that they should move into their new home and not accept the buyout from Linder. This decision by Walter is the beginning of him being becoming the real head of the household.

Mama wants to use the insurance money to buy a home for her family. She would be happy with all of her kids under the same roof, living together and working and contributing to society. The Youngers are living during the Jim Crow laws and other discriminatory actions of the 1940s-50s. There is racism in the country and it was diffiuclt for African American families to achieve their dreams. As a black woman, Mama was discriminated against for two reasons - her race and her gender. However, in the end Mama is able to keep her family together by using the insurance money to buy the family a new house in a nice neighborhood.
