The use of DuoLingo is creative in preserving the culture of Haitians in the United States. It allows Haitian descendants to practice the use of their Kreyòl and for others to learn about it. This allows many Haitian descendants to bring awareness of the beauty in Kreyòl. Kreyòl is more than just a language. It is their daily life and connection to their heritage. It is important to create awareness of Kreyòl as it is the identity of many. An easy way to introduce Kreyòl is through the partnership of food.

When I found a Disney Channel’s (2016) short film, I felt ecstatic. “Exchange” features a Haitian-American named Brijitte as the main character of the story. Brijitte is a bubbly character that faces the conflict of liking another student in her class. The school features other students of different nationalities and promotes the usage of multilingualism. Brijitte mostly converses with her peers in mostly English. Brijitte uses code-meshing with her family at home. Brijitte and her family blend both Kreyol and English. Brijitte’s older family members want her to be perceived as highly presentable at all times. 

From watching this short film, I can infer that Haitian-Americans are able to highly organize their thoughts in communicating both Kreyol and English in their conversation. Kreyol is portrayed as a beautiful language that expresses compassion and love. It was amazing to hear their song to the short film using Kreyol. A popular Kreyol phrase is “Sak Pase”, which means “What's happening”. This was used to introduce the short film and beautiful culture in the show. This is a general friendly greeting used by Haitians to start communicating with others. 

Knowing that there is not much literature and representation of Kreyol in the United States, Mollie Innocent-Cupid is pursuing research and writings about the unique experiences of Haitian immigrants. Mollie uses her own experiences as a reference to promote her language and culture. Mollie wants to tell the story of the resilience of the Kreyol identity.  By creating books, Mollie is able to make Kreyol more accessible for everyone to learn about the Kreyol culture.
