Science fiction is an enormous part of current pop culture, and it is interesting to look back at one of the earliest examples and see what the motivation was to write it. The Time Machine answers the essential question because the use of speculating and impossible events gives Wells the power to exaggerate and amplify his beliefs. Wells was an outspoken socialist, and The Time Machine was written as a criticism of capitalism and how it caused further divides in his time of Victorian England. Wells thinks that if class inequality and the unchecked advance of technology continues, then the rich will become too reliant on their technology and become weak, while the working class will be pushed to work but become savage. Wells speculated quite a lot in his works and was right in some of them, predicting phones, email, television, and atomic bombs. But science fiction is not written just to speculate; that is merely a side product. The real point is to “caution against the horrors of endless war, or to glorify human ingenuity, or to explore the ramifications of a radically different political system,” as Zach Berkson states. We should be able to see a new point of view from science fiction, and how the author sees how a problem today can become worse in the future.
