A coup is generally an attempted overthrow of a government by a smaller group who often lack popular support. When this coup originates from within the armed forces, it is known as a military coup. This was the case in Turkey, as many people within the military questioned the legitimacy of Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Such instability in Turkey is a major cause for concern because it may impact on Turkeys' crucial cooperation with NATO and the fight against IS in nearby Syria and Iraq. The alliance between Turkey and the US has also been threatened, because for America, such instability may result in no longer having access to Turkish military bases. This would mean that the ability to advance the war on IS is significantly reduced.
In Turkey's domestic political scene, it is likely that President Erdogan will do all that he can to not only hold on to his power, but to make it stronger as well. For instance, President Erdogan has decided that he will "...cleanse the ranks of the military" meaning that all those he he no longer trusts will be replaced with people who actually support him.

The Turkish coup (and attempted overthrow of government with minor popular support) has ramifications worldwide as well and nationally. With 190 dead, both police officers and coup members, the instability amongst the already fragile country is worrying. Because locations such us Incirlik occupy NATO US military bases, the threat of losing them due to instability will cause turmoil with travelling to and fighting against IS. As well as this, 1500 soldiers and hundreds of teachers and professors being detained. The lack of soldiers creates an unstable military and the loss of teaching personnel, resulting in over 600 schools being closed. Majorly 60,000 workers have been let go, because of this Turkey has been put in a state of emergency for 3 months.

s?[P

- A Coup is an overthrow, or attempted overthrow, of a government by a smaller group within the state who lack 'popular support'. When is originates from the armed forces, it is called a 'military coup' (pg. 34)
- The instability within Turkey is worrying because Turkey is in a crucial geographic location, being in between Europe and the Middle East both in location and culture. The crucial location of turkey makes it an important alliance for the Western world.
- It is likely to affect most countries worldwide, as the US and Europe need to remain on good terms with Turkey so that they have a way to track the events in the Middle East, and ISIS is waiting for the stability in Turkey to reduce in order for them to expand.
- Turkey's domestic political scene will be affected as there is now greater instability in Turkey, and the Government is left embarrassed and unsure about what to do to regain popular support. The President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan would be embarrassed at this point, and will need to regain support and therefore, power. Currently, all outlets for information, including schools, newspapers and journalism outlets, are now being monitored and closed down. This is seen in the journalists that are being questioned and the approximate 600 schools that have been closed down.
- The Global Geo-political implications include a more strained relationship internationally, especially the US and Europe, and increased fear of ISIS worldwide. The international community is certainly strained as fears of unrest and international instability become heightened.

1. A coup is an overthrow or an attempted overthrow of a government by a smaller group within a state, who lack popular support. The coup within Turkey was a military coup as it originated from within the armed forces.
2. The instability is worrying as nobody really knows what Turkeys next move will be. President Erdogan has wanted for a while to have more power. Now that Turkey is unstable it has become easier for Erdogan to get his wishes through the parliament . As political scientist Dogu Ergil from Ankara University said Erdogan’s “ambition to create a one-man government with a union of the executive and legislative, is now much easier to accomplish.”
3. The coup could impact on the rest of the world as the decisions that Turkey makes within the next couple of months will effected how other countries view their relationships with Turkey. The USA is very interested in what Turkey is doing as it could potentially change their alliance which would change the way America fights the war against ISIS. Almost 3000 prosecutors and judges, as well as almost 3000 military suspected plotters have been detained.
4. Turkey’s political scene will go through changes over the next couple of months. Many military leaders and judges have been detained. President Erdogan is looking to cleanse the ranks of the military. This could mean that he puts those who he trusts (or control) in power so he can have more power over Turkey.
5. The coup has already placed countries to rethink their alliance with Turkey. If anything dramatic happens over the next couple of months then countries that have an alliance with Turkey may not wish to any more. Organisations like NATO may decide on whether Turkey should still be a part of its organisation if they somebody like Erdogan gains more power. What countries, like Australia, will decide to do is uncertain as it will depend on Turkeys next move.

1.Coup: an overthrow or attempted overthrow of a government by a smaller group within the state who lack popular support. May not lead to major social or political reforms and may only replace one ruling class with another.

2.The instability in Turkey is so worrying because the country is a vital ally to the US in the war in Syria and Iraq.

3.The outcome of the coup is likely to impact upon the Turkish people because in attempting to gain back power Erdogan may make the country less democratic. Many civilians and police officers have been killed during the coup. Thousands of teachers snd University lecturers have been fired and their lived have therefore changed dramatically. The other members of NATO may be impacted upon as well.
4.It is said that Erdogan is trying to unify the executive and legislative powers, which would make the country less democratic as the power becomes consolidated in Erdogan. For any members suspected to be involved in the coup it is unlikely they will have a fair trial after Erdogan ‘purged’ the judiciary.

5.Geo-politically the coup and subsequent purges could create a tense relationship between Turkey and the US because the US has a vested interest in keeping access to their air-force bases to keep fighting against IS however America may not agree with some of the undemocratic actions of Erdogan.

A coup is an overthrow or an attempted overthrow of a government by a smaller group within the state, which usually lacks popular support. When it originates within the armed forces it is referred to as a military coup. The instability of Turkey is greatly alarming as it plays a pivotal role in the war effort, and key alliances. Turkey holding geographical importance makes them an essential alliance for the Western world. The significance of the alliance between the US and Turkey holds great value, as NATO and US access to Turkish military bases is vital in the war effort. However this important alliance is being threatened by instability in Turkey including the military coup and Erdogan’s questionable loyalty. US officials have accused Erdogan of “divided loyalties-“ and being a “Jihad Highway” for volunteer fighters coming from across the world to fight with ISIS. Through key alliances being threatened it could potentially act as a drag on important cooperation with NATO and its allied forces in Syria and Iraq, giving ISIS an advantage.Turkey’s instability does not only impact domestically but internationally too. Domestically turkish citizens face the threat of their democratic values being further diminished. Erdogan’s intolerance to dissent could further escalate, as a 16 year old was arrested for insulting the president. Furthermore 21,000 teachers have been fired, demands of suspension of every university dean and arrest warrants issued for 42 journalists, threatens their safety and security. Erdogan desire to "...cleanse the ranks of the military” pose increased danger and heightened seriousness to the peoples human rights and democratic values. Further instability between the citizens and the government could escalate as a result of harsher policies, followed by larger and more effective protests and increased support for overthrowing the government. Internationally, Turkey playing such a central role in the war could potentially affect the outcome, if alliances are further strained and self interests prevail, compromising the safety of global citizens.Possible geo-political implications include a further alarming and threatened relationship with the western allies and creating greater uncertainty of the outcome of the war. Turkey’s desires to join the EU could be impacted upon, and consideration of whether or not Turkey should remain part of NATO could also be questioned.

The Oxford Dictionary defines a Coup as a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government. On July 15th 2016, a Military organised coup was attempted in Turkey against the government but it overall wasn't successful. The coup originated from a group within the Turkish Armed Forces known as the Peace at Home Council. This council tried to take control of a number of key places in Turkey such as Ankara, Istanbul, but failed to do so after loyal supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan prevented them doing so. This instability is so worrying because according to the Age article from the 17th of July titled “Coup Shakes Fragile Region”, “Any instability in Turkey [at all] puts at risk the war against IS [and countries like France and the USA] in neighbouring [countries such as] Syria and Iraq. This instability therefore impacts on many stakeholder countries across the world such as Syria, Iraq, USA and France who are involved in the fight of preventing the destructive terrorist group, IS. Furthermore, US officials have been heard to have been accusing Turkey and their President of having “divided loyalties” in regards to being apart of the multilateral NATO, and taking in thousands of war affected refugees, but in turn providing a “jihad highway” for potential and current IS fighters as well as providing them with “major supply and rest zones”. This event will drastically effect Turkey’s domestic political scene because if they are seen as being disloyal to the USA and other NATO members, this could end up further damaging the embarrassment Turkey has already endured to the reputation from the Coup. Additionally, the President has run wild by arresting thousands of people he believes to be ‘supporters’ of the Coup. This includes the sacking and arrests of teachers which leaves thousands of young school children unable to attend each day. Lastly, this domestic destruction in Turkey will have large global repercussions including a divide in countries who support or don't support the attempted Coup. For example, The leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, Vladimir Zhirinovsky supported the coup attempt where as a White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said that President Obama talked with President Erdogan to reiterate how he and the US are in support of a democratically elected government and therefore are against the Coup. This disagreement could create simmering tensions again between the two large superpowers from the Cold War.

A coup is generally considered to be an overthrow, or attempted overthrow, of a government by a smaller group within the state, who lack popular support. When this coup originated from within the armed forces it is called a military coup. In recent weeks, a coup has arisen in Turkey within the military, causing great instability within the country.

This instability in incredibly worrying, as Turkey is well founded ally of the US, and this instability could spread and affect other countries. The recent coup in Turkey has placed the country in turmoil, and while speculation has risen that President Erdogan is running an ‘authoritarian’ government, he has insisted that “Turkey has a democratically elected government and president”. Turkey over recent month has showed interest in joining the multilateral organisation of the European Union, however the recent unilateral actions of Erdogan suggest that that may not be the case, and if it is, that there would be great repercussions on all other EU members. The instability in Turkey could lead to a demolishment of democracy in the country, and the rise of authoritarianism, with a main ambition of Erdogan to form a union of the executive and legislative.

The turmoil in Turkey has spread its effect over to the US as well, where there is growing distate over the recent actions of the Turkish president. The US have now been put in a position where they can compromise their values, by handing over Gulen - a current resident of the US who has been accused of masterminding the protests - to keep Turkey happy and maintain their relationship with them, or they can refuse to hand him over, and potentially make an enemy of Turkey. It is unlikely that the US will want to make an enemy of Turkey, as the strategic placement of the country allows them easy access to the conflicts and war against Islamic State. If the US do decide to hand Gulen over, they may keep an ally of Turkey, but their relationship will be inevitably frayed, with Erdogan’s once ‘darling status’ in Washington decreasing exponentially.

It is blatant that Erdogan and Turkey is an essential ally to the West, but at this moment, they are far from popular with their allies. Any concerns however, will most likely by muted, as Turkey is essential in the war against Isis. Any friction between Turkey and its allies could lead to a worsening of terrorist attacks globally. If the US were to lose Turkey as an ally, it could have greater implications world wide. Not only would the ability to fight Isis decrease, the attacks worldwide could potentially increase, leading to disaster worldwide.
