This article explains how skin is a determining beauty factor. It explains how minor and common skin conditions can cause self-consciousness. This article is relevant to this topic because it explains why skin is so important to determine society's standard of beauty. As we have learned, skin was the first beauty 'project' because our complexion helped people advance their social standing. This article states that skin is one of the most visible signs of aging. As we have learned, airbrushing removes wrinkles and age spots which supports society's standard that looking young is beautiful (Sinclair, 2018).

This picture shows a woman with acne and redness on the left and society's standard of a beautiful complexion on the right. The woman on the right has no signs of acne, redness or pores. This is relevant because it demonstrates how society's standard of beauty is skin will absolutely no imperfections such as acne, redness, pores, or texture. No magazines, tv shows or advertisements show women with acne which teaches women that they need to purchase cosmetics in order to fit in. Companies target girls at young ages about the appearance of their complexion in order to get them to invest in their products. This has led women of all ages to invest in their complexion (Leiva, 2017).

This video provides insight from people of many different complexions on how they have felt about their experience with standards of beauty relating to skin colour. This is relevant because it demonstrates how society has made individuals with darker complexions feel less beautiful. One women explains how fair skin has been linked to beauty because of white Europeans justifying slavery. One women also shared her experience with the use of skin bleaching (BuzzFeedVideo, 2016).

Model Nyakim Gatwech explains the trouble she had growing up with having a dark complexion. She explains that it was not until she came to America that she felt that her skin colour was not beautiful. Then she overcame that and showed America how beautiful her dark skin is by becoming a model. This is relevant because she discusses skin whitening, whitewashing in magazines and makeup artists not providing her with the right makeup for her skin. She also mentions that someone asked her if she would bleach her skin so that men would find her attractive which is an example of how the male gaze is used to get women to conform to society's beauty standards. The colour of Nyakim's complexion had a huge impact on her career and her life growing up in America (As/Is, 2017).

This video is about a woman who posted a photo of herself without makeup on social media which showed her face with acne. The comments were extremely negative. Then she posted a photo of herself with makeup on that covered her acne and the comments were very positive. When people discovered what she actually looked like, the comments became negative again. The message this video is trying to send is that no matter if you wear makeup or not, social media will always find a reason to make you feel bad about yourself. This is relevant because society is telling this woman that something as common as acne is what makes her ugly and then shames her for covering it up because it is "false advertising". However, advertisements and media in general do this with everything they produce due to photoshop (Ford, 2015).

These pictures are of Zendaya and Willow Smith from a W Magazine cover. These pictures demonstrate how media is whitewashing models in magazines by lightening their skin tone to conform to the lighter complexion standard of beauty. This is relevant because it shows that the media is conforming to society's standard of a lighter complexion by lightening the skin tone of the models. This leads women to use harmful skin bleaching products in order to conform to society's beauty standards (Sanusi, 2016).

This article explains how Rihanna's makeup brand, Fenty Beauty, released 40 different shades of foundation and it's effect on the beauty industry. Ever since Rihanna released her various shades of foundation it led other brands to widen their shade range too. This also opened up more opportunities for beauty brands to collaborate more with models of darker skin tones. At the New York Fashion Week, models noticed that there was much more models and makeup artists of darker complexions after the release of Fenty Beauty. This is relevant because the more beauty brands collaborate with models of a darker complexion, the more society will accept darker skin as beautiful and break society's current beauty standard. In order to sell skin whitening products, ads would display darker skin as an imperfection. However, if more beauty brands widen their shade range for darker women, the more likely the beauty standard for lighter skin will end (Schallon, 2018).

This picture is of singer Beyonce before and after airbrushing. This is relevant because it demonstrates how the media is trying to display an unrealistic expectation of beauty. The magazine editors airbrushed her skin to the point where she has no pores, smile lines or texture. Women will be comparing themselves to a model that does not even look like that. Airbrushing lowers women's self-confidence and supports the beauty standard of youthfulness (Slater, 2017).

This article is about the movement to help people embrace their acne by posting photos of themselves without makeup. This was done to help break society's stigma towards acne. Even famous celebrities such as Kendall Jenner made posts about their acne. This is relevant because beauty has always been associated with clear skin, which therefore teaches individuals that they need to cover up their acne is order to identify as beautiful (Sanghani, 2018).
