In this chapter Isla is depicted as sympathetic, compassionate and anxious.
Anxious - "I must have been twisting it over and over on the way home because the paper at the top was all grimy and creased and torn."
In this quote polysindeton is demonstrated. Grimy AND creased AND torn. This technique helps to slow down the story and your reading. you can tell that Isla is anxious as on the way home she was twisting the bag over and over again. she is doing this because she doesn't know how her brother will react to getting the lollies or if it will even help.

Compassionate/sympathy "...The white paper bag of mixed lollies I had in my hand. they were for my brother."
Isla it getting this bag of mixed lollies to try to comfort her little brother after the loss of his friend.

Isla is depicted in this chapter as being hopeful and being surrounded by darkness. The B&B in which they stay gives Isla some temporary hope. She states that "It was just about the nicest place i had ever lived". This is hope and light is immediately juxtaposed when Isla moves out down to an old house three doors down which was "the worst house in Battery Point". Like her, the house was "dark and faded".

in this chapter isla is depicted as scared and anxious
"id pull my brothers hand hard, and we'd run and run, not even breathe, until we were through." this shows how she is scared as the quote is very quick and the repetition of the word run gives us a sense of her urgency.
"down, down, and we'd try not to look ahead into the dark lane." this demonstrates Isla's fear of the darkness and the repetition of the word 'down' shows how anxious she is about going through this dark alleyway.

In this chapter, Isla is depicted as being sad and lonely, however towards the end of the chapter as being hopeful and excited.

"the rain came down" Chapter opens with pathtic fallacy to reveal the rain and cold evoke Isla's sad and lonely spirit.

"He waved again like he knew me. He waved. Someone could see me." Anaphora reveals Isla is desperate for love and attention, thus Parrett is depicting Isla as lonely.

"A patch of sunlight broke through the clouds, hit the red beam, just a tiny beam." Isla in this point in time is beginning to feel hopeful.

"Nella Dan. Nella Dan. Nella Dan. They made my heart beat out faster."
