         <description><![CDATA[<p>Gases are exchanged due to the presence of stomata, the gases that are outside the leaves have a higher concentration compared to the gases in the stomata, thus diffusion occurs, letting gases like carbon dioxide to enter the stomata and oxygen and water vapour to exit the stomata.</p>]]></description>

Since there is a higher water potential in the soil compared to the roots the water molecules pass through the partially permeable membrane and into the xylem.
