With households are barely earning enough income, a family is considered lucky if they get to eat a meal in a day. As the pandemic dominated the country, families found it harder to come by money to buy food.   

As mentioned before, this forces them to resort to eating off the garbage. The people that collect food from the garbage would reheat it and feed it to themselves and their children. This has been a common practice in the slums of Tondo as they are poverty stricken. Implementing urban gardens where the community could grow their own food instead of relying on food that came from the garbage could alleviate the food shortage. Not only would this reduce the transportation costs, residents would have easier access to their food.

In January 2021, Tondo barangays participated in an urban garden festival held in their area. They were able to convert a 8,000 square meter football field into a vegetable garden. Residents were also able to earn 19,000 pesos in 2 hours. Not only is it one of the most densely populated areas in the world, but most shelters that the residents live in do not even have restrooms for them to clean themselves or to defecate. They resort to plastic bags or even doing it in public when it comes to defecating. 

Additionally, according to the National Sewerage and Septage Management Program (NSSMP):

• approximately 55 people die from poor sanitation and sewage issues everyday.
• roughly 8% of the country's population does not have access to any kind of a sanitation facility

Though solar water pumping, also known as Photovoltaic Pumping (PVP), is not a very popular concept, this could potentially provide the families of Tondo the water they need to drink and clean themselves. 

Not only would the usage of solar power eliminate the usage of fuel, the costs would also be lower than water pumps run by electricity and environmentally sustainable. However, these water pumps do not work at night since they are powered by solar energy.
