In 2020, UNICEF will enter a major new phase for education of Rohingya refugee children living in camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, together with other humanitarian actors. Following a landmark decision by the Government of Bangladesh, UNICEF will further expand access to education by introducing the Myanmar curriculum on a pilot basis in the first half of the year. The pilot targets older children, who currently have less access to education compared with their younger counterparts. ""Education takes people from the darkness and brings them into the light.

Few Rohingya students have enough learning to study at the higher levels , equivalent of grades 3 to 8, due to the poor status of their education in Rakhine State in Myanmar. For the humanitarian Education Sector as a whole, there are 315,000 children and adolescents studying at over 3,200 learning centers in the refugee camps, out of which over 70 per cent are enrolled in UNICEF-supported centers.

Almost a million Rohingya -- most of whom fled a military offensive in neighboring Myanmar three years ago -- live in squalid camps in southeastern Bangladesh. Dhaka wants to move 100,000 of the refugees to Bhashan Char, a silt island that critics say is prone to flooding and in the path of cyclones that frequently wreak havoc in the region. 'All modern amenities' -Bangladesh has spent some $400 million from its own coffers building shelters and a nine-foot flood embankment around the facilities. The United Nations office in Bangladesh said it had been prevented from independently assessing the «safety, feasibility and sustainability» of the island as a place to live.

«Any movement of refugees needs to be done voluntarily and in safety and dignity,» Dujarric said. Mohammad Jubaer, 28, who was on one of the ships with three family members on the three-hour sea journey from Chittagong to the island on Friday, said he was happy to go. «I hope there will be enough work for me in the island. I wish they would also bring my brother and his family to the island,» he told AFP by phone.

Refugee children are at high risk of disease, including malnutrition, as well as physical abuse and violence. This means children cannot sit for exams or pass a grade level. A reported 97% of all youth ages 14 to 24 also lack access to any form of education or vocational training. This means that children are smaller for their age and may never catch up.
