This exhibition explores the idea of development by blending modern life with Japan’s traditional culture. Using Zentangle Ink Art to reinterpret mythology, it reflects Japan’s ability to evolve while staying rooted in its heritage. The theme of cultural continuity is inspired by iconic god drawings and traditions. Waves symbolize resilience and the passage of time, while the carp, known for swimming upstream, represents endurance—reinforcing the exhibition’s message of persistence and change.

This piece highlights the vibrant contrast between the red flower and the yellow tassel, creating a visually compelling subject. The flower’s bold color and high quality details add depth and interest, while the tassel serves as the focal point. By applying the Rule of Thirds, the tassel is positioned near an intersection point, ensuring balance and engagement. The combination of the flower’s organic color and the tassel’s placement enhances harmony and visual impact.

This piece explores the balance between technical precision and creative expression through the use of a ballpoint pen. The structured nature of the still life format allowed me to focus on perspective and composition, while the arrangement of everyday objects gave room for artistic freedom. The use of a ballpoint pen — a common, accessible tool — adds a layer of challenge, transforming something ordinary into a detailed and intentional artwork. Inspired by both classical and modern still life artists, including Kim Jung-gi, I aimed to highlight the pen’s ability to capture fine details and subtle contrasts, bringing depth and clarity to the composition.

This piece explores the theme of growth through still life, using perspective and composition to guide the viewer’s eye. Studies of grapes and wine glasses informed the composition, highlighting the transformation from fruit to wine as a symbol of progress. Light, shadow, and depth were carefully used to suggest time and change. The ballpoint pen medium demands control and patience, reflecting the slow, steady process of growth. By balancing realism with symbolic meaning, the final composition illustrates how small changes accumulate into something more refined and complete.

This piece explores the balance between tradition and experimentation by combining oil paint with a magazine collage. The slow-drying, thick nature of oil paint allowed me to build layered textures that realistically mimic the torn edges of paper. Bold colors—green, yellow, and red—are evenly distributed across the symmetrical composition, creating both harmony and contrast. Red and green, as complementary colors, introduce visual tension, while the rule of thirds guides the viewer’s eye to a bright red focal point.

This piece reflects my brother’s emotional journey leading up to his graduation. I layered yellow and blue over magazine clippings to represent time and memory, with blue paint dripping down like time washing over the past. His black-and-white silhouette and the Chinese characters “高麗 (Goryeo)” symbolize both achievement and struggle. Through this work, I expressed not only his experience, but also my own feelings of pride, pain, and reflection.
