Global Issue : Human rights violation due to unethical beliefs and education.

Research question : To what extent does affect women population the removement of rights due to a regime that only leads by sexist religious beliefs and values?

Literary techniques : The literary technique could be symbolism, since the love letters represents the way the girl had and inside battle about her own personal desires and the rigid system she belonged to that denied her any right, she couldn't even study due to personal beliefs of her own family that led them to commit unethical actions like give their daughter to strangers just to get money, and due to social separation she didn't have the right to study so she couldn't read or write, this represents her desire to get free of that world. On the other hand, the girl writing and reading the letter for her is a representation of the clear social divisions in that time, the little girl says in one frame "we are not in the same social class but at least we were in the same bed"; this sets too how her intergenerational beliefs are against her personal values and the way she understands the world, she couldn't understand just how social barriers work. Moreover, if we see it in a global context, there's very good represented the gender roles that were given in the past because of beliefs, some of these could be that women couldn't study because they only were worthy to take care of children and be a household.

Global issue : Oppression of women under dictatorships.

Research question : How does the corruption, the lack of democracy, and religious-leaded regime affect the population?

Literary techniques : One literary technique could be the contrast, since the protagonist uses this tool to compare her life when she had freedom and the when she had to wear the veil, that leads us to another use of literary technique, which is symbolism; the veil represents the freedom, when women start to wear it, the most their faith was turmoiled. On the other hand, it can also be vinculated with real life situations that Iranian women live today, not wearing the hijab or the veil correctly can lead to a unfair punishment or even death.

Global issue : Political unfairness and persecution.

Research question : To what extent can politics non-democratic regime affect the lives of a population in a country?

Literary techniques : One of the main literary techniques that can be found in this chapter is flashbacks, since Marjane's father tells the story of her grandfather and how he endured prison and torture due to his political position, highlighting the political oppression through the years. On the other hand, if it is seen in a present global context, we can still see this issue happening, for example in Venezuela today, if there's a person that is against the regime they will be captured and tortured.
