i think as an educator its difficult to talk about poverty in education. however, shannon, you brought it up in your presentation that as a teacher you have to be concious of the materials you require of your students. some kids dont have acccess to a laptop so assigning online work can mean they need to stay late at school to use computers, need to go to a public library, borrow from a friend, or that might be enough to have the student not do the work at all. Things like projects too. requiring posters, glue, colorful pens, scissors, stickers, popcicle sticks, etc, may be things students dont have access to at homem causing them to spend more to do the work.

hi claireeeeeeeeE
yes i agree, poverty is something that is hard to teach because so many students may be affected. some students might not understand it as well, which is fine, if they don't get it right away but would make it hard for the teacher to explain in a better way. class activities and homework that require minimal supplies is also beneficial, definitely.
but what is important is that us as educators do our best to explain poverty in education so our students are well informed.

I believe it is very difficult for a teacher to discuss the topic of poverty. It is mostly difficult because you as the teacher do not know much about the student and their home life. You do not want to effect students negatively but rather be a support system for them, and I think that is very hard to do in a subject like this. I think one step is to limit the amount of supplies needed to complete assignments and im not just talking about homework but also projects.

Hi Camryn! I agree, emphasizing that your classroom is a safe space and that you as a teacher are always there for your students is incredibly important in making students from low-income areas more comfortable.

As an educator, I believe that understanding the socioeconomic situation of those in your classroom is essential. To properly understand the poverty in your classroom, building close relationships with students, parents, and working with other teachers in the school can help break the stigma of working with low-income students and work how to best help them in the classroom. For example, there are low income students who have to work to provide for their families. In that case, I will be lenient on work outside of the classroom and also provide ample study materials to all student to ensure they succeed with the little free time they have allotted to schoolwork outside of the classroom/ Additionally, catering to the students specific needs is important. For example, if I assign an assignment that is online and the student's family can not afford internet or computer expenses, I will give the student printed materials and assignment. That will ensure that the student will not fall behind due to poverty.

Hi Ella. I completely agree. Giving additional class time to work on assignments is not something I mentioned in my response but will do when I am working in the classroom. I did not think about the emotional toll poverty has on students and will be sure to include one-on-one SEL and conversations with those students to ensure they are upholding the highest mental health standards. I completely love and respect how you think as an educator, you value emotional health and learning just as much as you do academics. Great job! And thank you for giving me a different way to view how to teach a classroom.
