Ghana's decline

The decline of Ghana's empire began around 1150, due to several external factors. The Almoravids, a Muslim Berber people intent on spreading their religion, invaded the kingdom and inflicted much destruction to its resources. In addition, environmental changes caused droughts that reduced Ghana’s resources and weakened its power. Lastly, the development of the trans-Saharan trade saw Niger-Congo states usurp Ghana’s power. The consequences of the decline of Ghana’s empire were far-reaching. In the immediate aftermath, many Ghanaian communities were displaced, dissolved or assimilated into neighboring Mali. Political, economic and cultural structures of Ghana, along with its powerful trading networks, largely dissipated. Finally, the kingdom’s influence was replaced by the spread of Islamic culture in what is now the western Sahel region of West Africa.
