Respect, I think, ultimately comes down to treating something/someone well. We don't have a right to break things and people just because we're unhappy, dislike the thing/person, are careless, etc. Treating people as though they're valuable for no other reason than the fact that they're human is such an important quality to develop! Taking time to listen to people whether we agree or disagree with them, doing what we can to assume the best of others, and truly seeing a person as a complex human are all ways we can show respect. It's not liking everyone. It's not agreeing with everyone. It's not encouraging poor behavior. It doesn't need to be those things. It truly is honoring the human experience.

I grew up with a great grandfather who was a Marine and I learned a huge amount of respect from him. He taught me to treat people the way I want to be treated. To help others in need. To say please and thank you. You are to respect everyone around you. Yes we all have our days where we are not respectful. The biggest thing I think to help with respect is to re-evaluate a situation that you aren't respectful and do better next time. You may not agree with someone but you are to respect their opinion.

Respect should be a mutual thing between individuals and both sides are being listened to. We're only human and will make mistakes but it is important to respect one another and give second chances regardless the past action we have done. Everybody deserves a second chance because most of us learn from our mistakes and take the steps to growing into a better person. - Brenda

I think respect is acknowledging one's boundaries, and having common courtesies. I.e. holding the door for someone, waving at an acquaintance in the hallway. There might have been blurred lines between compassion and respect in the videos shown today. Compassion is the process of empathy in which we try to understand another's consciousness by reflecting upon our own. For example, the man who helped the girl sing the national anthem, knew the girl might have felt nervous from his own experiences, so he stood by her and helped her sing. I will say that respect is the more "surface-level" form of empathy. -Kamryn

Namaste, is common greeting in India, but also familiar in the U.S. if you've ever taken a yoga class. At the end of a yoga class, the teacher leads her students with a parting acknowledgement: "Namaste." Strictly translated from sanskrit, the word means "I bow to you." The deeper understanding behind this word is that every soul is divine and we recognize the connection of one soul to every soul. A fuller definition might be: “The divine light in me bows to the divine light within you.” What I love about this moment of honor and respect is that it extends to ourselves. Respect is not just about others, but must include how we treat ourselves and allow ourselves to be treated.

Respect means treating others with kindness and understanding even when you don’t need to. It’s treating others the way you want to be treated. Listening to others and talking/ understanding what they are saying, even if you don’t personally agree with them. Respect can be earned to a higher level and can also be lost.
