The main points that the chart and text make about the hazardous conditions of tenements is that due to how poorly the tenements were made, it lead to the high death-rate of children under 5. The chart's columns compare the death-rate of children under 5 years of age between single tenements and in front and rear tenements in the same lot. This table suggests that front and rear tenements had the highest death-rate than single tenements. In pg. 391 at the bottom of the chart, it says, "...the general deat

The photograph that best supports the information in the paragraph is the picture titled "Five Cents a Spot". This picture provides visual evidence to support Riis' claim that their living situations were extremely confined. In the text Riis describes a particular tenement as being so small that "Three short steps across either way would have measured its full extent." In the picture “Five Cents a Spot”, their living conditions become more of a reality to the viewer as it provides an actual image of how tight the tenements really were. What the photograph does that the written description does not is that it makes the audience sympathize with the people residing in the tenements by invoking more emotion and by revealing the grim reality of life in their tenements. What the written description provides that the picture does not is that it gives more of a background of the people that lived there and its effects on them

The data and the three photos think about in demonstrating the confined living quarters gave in the apartments. In the content Jacob Riis states that, "With barely room enough to pivot in they had been constrained to pay five dollars and a large portion of a month ahead of time." This statement shows that the everyday environments in the apartments were ludicrously little and the lease was overrated in contrast with the concession procured by the individuals who needed to pay it. The photo that best backings the data in the section is the image named "Five Cents a Spot". This image gives visual proof to help Riis' case that their day to day environments were very restricted. In the content Riis portrays a specific apartment as being little to the point that "Three short strides across whichever way would have estimated its full degree." In the image "Five Cents a Spot", their everyday environments become to a greater extent a reality to the watcher as it gives a real picture of how close the apartments truly were. What the photo does that the composed portrayal doesn't is that it causes the crowd to feel for the individuals living in the apartments by summoning more feeling and by uncovering the troubling truth of life in their apartments. What the composed depiction gives that the image doesn't is that it gives all the more a foundation of the individuals that lived there and its consequences for them. For instance, in the content it discusses "… the instance of a persevering group of man and spouse, youngsters from the old country, who took poison together in a Crosby Street apartment since they were 'drained'." The composed portrayal of this family attempts to give more data about the impacts the apartments had on the occupants in contrast with the visual portrayal in "Five Cents a Spot"

The statistic Riis brings up is the 75 to 1,000 death ratio in the city, "The wretched pile harbored no less than forty families, and the annual rate of deaths to the population was officially stated to be 75 in 1,000." This statistic shows how much of an impact the living condition of the tenements had on people and society. It also shows how malign the people who own the tenements were since they knew the conditions and the problems of having so many people in a small room sleeping but they still kept doing it.
