Choice and Trust

Giving students the space and trust to make decisions related to their learning, such as where and how to learn, as well as who to learn with. This is sometimes a struggle as a teacher, we often make these decisions for students when we think we know best or want to avoid conflict in our classroom. We can often predict the type of issues that might arise from certain students working together and try to avoid these issues. After reading this article, I have begun to look at this from a different perspective. Trusting students to make these choices, and understanding that they will make the wrong choice sometimes, but using these as learning opportunities and chances for them to learn more about themselves as learners. Giving them opportunity to develop ATL skills such as self-management and social skills ( respecting and collaborating with others).

Three-way conferences are a great way to develop assessment capable learners, taking ownership and being able to identify successes as well as areas for improvement without having some else point these areas out first. This helps them to develop as reflective thinkers.

In alignment with my other observations, giving students ownership of their learning, having them identify mistakes, and what it looks like to be successful in a certain task will help them develop as assessment capable learners, allowing them to make mistakes and reflect as opposed to always handing them the " answer" of what is expected or where they need to improve.

It's important to build a positive and safe environment where students feel valued and heard, not only by teachers but also peers. At an international school, having students from different cultures and with different beliefs, provides the perfect opportunity to help students develop as internationally minded learners.
