Derek Thompson, author of The Anti Social Century, states that self inflicted solitude has risen over the years. He asserts that this increase in isolation has and will continue to affect people's personalities, politics, and overall culture in modern society. And can lead to consequences, for both individuals and society.

Homebound/Phonebound- The increase in the usage of cell phones (mobile devices) have played a significant part in solitude. And because technology is now accessible in a more faster, and convenient way, many individuals do not find the need to go out and socialize that much. An example of this is Thompson stating that the typical American only buys 3 movie tickets from home, but watches the equivalent of roughly 8 movies from home on a weekly basis.

Introversion Delusion- Thompson argues that moments of solitude can be alright, but that "dosage matters." According to his paper on the rise of 21st century solitude, people tend to be less happy if they repeatedly spend time alone, over a certain number of years.

One prominent figure Thompson referenced in The Anti Social Century is Nick Epley, a psychologist who conducted an experiment and discovered that people actually felt better after interacting with a stranger on a commuter train. Another person Thompson refers to is Andrew Taggart, a philosopher and writer who noted that people (he specifically mentions men) are delaying or forgoing getting married and having children. A third person Thompson discusses is Mark Chen, a research scientist who made a demonstration of himself conversing with ChatGPT to show the audience how it can impersonate a human being.

A possible counterargument on Thompson's points- the title "Introversion Delusion" feels very broad, and seemingly implies a strong connotation for those individuals. There are a multitude of reasons why someone might prefer alone time. And being introverted is not mutually exclusive with being shy, or having social anxiety.

Modern American society has become more less social compared to previous years, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence. It can lead to people becoming emotionally reliant on AI, and turning to it instead of other people. The concept of solitude is not inherently a bad thing, but if it is not kept at a certain limit, it can have significant effects over the lives of those individuals, and the society they live in.
