Branbantio is saying Othello is a black mage who, with some spells, got his daughter to fall in love with him. This is not the case, Othello is a great man and general of Venice, he seduced her with his manhood, reputation and Honor, contrary to what Branbantio is stating, which is a society prejudice that all moors or black skinned man is directly bad.

Iago ''...and asked him humbly to make me his lieutenant, the second in command. And I know my own worth well enough to know I deserve that position. But he wants to have things his own way, so he sidesteps the issue with a lot of military talks and refuses their requests. ''I've already chosen my lieutenant,'' he says. And who does he choose? A guy who knows more about numbers then fighting! This guy from Florence named Michael Cassio. He has a pretty wife but he can't even control her. And he's definitely never commanded men in battle. He's got no more hands-on knowledge of warfare than an old women-unless you count what he's read in books, which any peace-lover can do. His military understanding is all theory, no practice. But Cassio's been chosen over me. My career is cut short by some bookkeeper, even though the general saw my fighting skills first-hand in Rhodes and Cyprus. This accountant is now lieutenant, while I end up as the Moor's flagbearer.'' (Shakespeare p.3-4)

Iago is jealous of Michael Cassio because he got the position of lieutenant while he didn't. He describes Michael Cassio in a really bad way, talking about all his flaws and explains why he is way better than Cassio. It shows how jealous he is of Cassio for getting the position he wanted so much.

A reputation is useless and fake quality that others impose on us. You haven't lost it unless you think you have. There are lots of ways to get on the general's good side again. You've been discharged because he's angry, and because he's obliged to do so for policy reasons, not because he dislikes you. He's got to beat up the weak to frighten the strong. Go to him, petition him. He'll change his mind.
