         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Rain Water Tank: </em></strong><a href="http://www.iwra.org/congress/resource/abs636_article.pdf">http://www.iwra.org/congress/resource/abs636_article.pdf</a><br>The purpose of having a water tank at school is to minimise water consumption and allow students to learn about the importance of water management. Rainwater if collected correctly, is extremely pure and often tastes a lot nicer than regular drinking water. <br><strong>Connection to Sustainability</strong><br>-Less town water consumption<br>-Reduces plastic bottle use in schools <strong><br></strong>The ‘Rainwater Tank in Schools Project’ focused on Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) objectives and employed best practice with benefits including cost savings, learning opportunities as well as the environmental benefits.<br>&nbsp;The aims of the project included:&nbsp;</div><div>• <em>Economic </em>– saving money on water bills, promoting the recognition of externalities, avoiding infrastructure development&nbsp;</div><div>• <em>Social </em>– considering policies and guidelines, building student capacity, promoting student ownership&nbsp;</div><div>• <em>Environmental </em>– promoting efficient resource use, promoting efficient water use, maintaining resource integrity, protecting environmental health <br><strong>Action Plan for a whole school approach:<br>-</strong>Students could fundraise through a fete that involves the community or just through games/food selling etc between the students over a period of time to fundraise towards the water tank. <strong><br></strong>-Students could create a veggie garden completely watered by the tank/s<br>-No plastic bottles, bring your own refillable bottle or use the fountains connected to the tanks<br><strong>How it is adapted to real life</strong><br>-Students will learn about how cost effective a water tank is and possibly invest in one in their own home one day<br>-Teaches the importance of conserving water (a water tank only holds so much so you have to use it wisely) <br>-Encourages other sustainable practices such as eliminating plastic bottle waste<br>-If students fundraised the tank it gives them a sense of pride and ownership for their work?<br><strong>Other water saving ideas</strong><br>-Installing sub-metres to monitor water consumption in the school<br>-Waterless urinals <br>-Biomax toilet system: Waste is treated from a Subsurface drip irrigation which is installed under the school lawns and garden beds. <br>-Sensors on taps that only turn on when hands are touching them<br>-Adding soil improvers that require less water to enrich the grass across ovals<br><strong>Stakeholders involved:<br></strong>-Students<br>-School Committee team to organise if the tank was fundraised <br>-local community if there was a fundraiser<br>-Teachers<br>-Possibly local council? for approval etc<strong><br>Other useful links<br></strong><a href="https://www.watercorporation.com.au/home/education/waterwise-schools-program">https://www.watercorporation.com.au/home/education/waterwise-schools-program</a></div><div>http://det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/sustainableschools/detcms/portal/</div><div>http://www.eisau.com.au/blog/sustainability-in-schools-water/</div><div>http://www.environment.gov.au/about-us/publications/archive#water<br><br>Feel free to add anything :)</div>]]></description>

         <title>Veggie Patch </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A veggie patch within a school environment, allows students to control waste management, by only growing and planting the food in which they need and will use, reducing the amount of food wastage as a result of over-purchasing at the supermarket and changing food plans. Students learn what plants need to grow, and how to care for a garden, teaching them to respect their surroundings. Students gain a sense of achievement, and ownership as they have invested the time in planting, and caring for the plants, with this comes pride and excitement as they watch their plants grow and are able to eat them. <br><br><strong>Connections to Sustainability:&nbsp;</strong></div><ul><li>Less processed food is brought into schools, as one day a week could be set aside for cooking with the vegetables grown.&nbsp;</li><li>Students learn the value of environment care and respect.&nbsp;</li><li>Information is passed on, regarding over-purchasing and to only buy what you will use.&nbsp;</li><li>Limiting wastage.&nbsp;</li><li>Economically cheaper to plant and grow own vegetables rather than buying them.&nbsp;</li><li>Socially combined project, working collaboratively with others to gain knowledge, understanding and skills.&nbsp;</li></ul><div><br><strong>How it it Adapted to Real Life?</strong></div><ul><li>Students learn how to plant and care for a garden, that they can use later in life to plant their own vegetables.</li><li>Students become mindful of their surrounding environment, and have the understanding and knowledge to respect and care for it.&nbsp;</li><li>Students implement what they have learnt, by only buying what they will use, so that wastage is reduced.&nbsp;</li><li>Save money, by planting them yourself, and gives a sense of pride and achievement.&nbsp;</li></ul><div><br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Energy Conservation: Light usage. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Electric lighting burns up to 25% of the average home energy budget (eartheasy.com/live_energyyeff_lighting.htm)&nbsp;<br><br>CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) and LEDs (light emitting diodes): typically use about 25%-80% less energy than traditional incandescent and can last 3-25 times longer&nbsp; (energy.gov)<br><br>Imagine your household and how many lights are on every night, each light bulb costing you money as well as using more energy in turn harming our environment.&nbsp;<br><br>Strategies:&nbsp;<br>- Switching to more energy efficient light bulbs; such as LED's and CFL's<br>- Utilising sunlight rather than artificial lighting<br>- Using timer's that automatically switch off lights.&nbsp;<br><br>Implementing these strategies in the school as well as encourage students to implement them at home will converse energy.<br><br>In the classroom teaching students the impact that lights/light bulbs have on our environment will provide and teach them ways to help rather than harm.&nbsp;<br><br>Connecting light bulbs to solar power will also converse energy<br><br>There are some places to even recycle old light bulbs. e.g. Ikea which have marked recycling bins.</div>]]></description>
