Cory was a Senior in high school and he was a respectful son to his mom Rose but he always feared his father, Loved football and wanted to play College, he was respectful and compassionate to his disabled nephew.

I can’t work after school during the football

He is saying that his dad never let him do what he wanted and didn't let him play football and just wanted him to work and that what Cory didn't want to do.

I chose the part because its saying give me land give let me ride through the wide country that I love 'Don't fence me in' , because Cory is always asking his dad to keep him free and let him live his own life because Cory feels that Troy was never proud of him.

Cory see's himself as the future of the family and wants to make his father proud and thinks he is a good football player and thinks he will actually get drafted to the NFL.

Troy thinks that Cory is a fool and he is a ungrateful son and he doesn't think he is good at football because he is black and sports are for white people at that time and wants him to work a normal job because he is wasting his time with college and football.
