Looking into teaching I’ve always been so intrigued with the process of just being able to help someone obtain information that they’ll remember for a lifetime, but also just growing up and learning how to become their own person. In middle school I had a teacher who was influential to me! She was an english teacher, a woman, a person of color, and just a great listener. Everything I wanted in a teacher, and she really showcased to me different ways of how she can teach numerous skills and terms. Yet still finding a way to help us through tough times, which she then would just condole us and explain how to handle situations like this in the future. I’ll impact others by being there as a teacher, but also as a friend. Someone you can go to no matter the circumstance, because there were a lot of kids back then who didn’t have anyone to confide to. So we would all confide to this teacher and let out any emotions or distress going on in our lives. Which is exactly what I want to do for students, because being a teacher isn’t always about the tests, homework, etc. There is also a big part of just connecting with a student and finding out who they truly are as a person, and even trying to be a help to them when needed. I love my job of choice, as it is like a never-ending engagement activity, in which I get to learn a lot about various different personalities. No student has the exact same attitude or work ethic everyday, and as teachers, we need to see and understand that. In making day to day accomodations, students will feel more comfortable and cared for, rather than always being pushed to work the same way every single day. I know that, as a student, when a teacher realizes I am having a bad day and decides to take it easy, I feel less stressed and later more motivated to catch up on doing the work for that class. Of course, everyday cannot be an easy or laid back day, but some days, especially in middle and high school education, students simply need a break. Even this year, my teachers have been assigning more work than normal because we are out of school every other day; when every teacher assigns extra work, they ignore the fact (most likely unintentionally) that other teachers will be doing the same because we "have more time." In reality, all my teachers have assigned nearly double the work we would normally have, which get overwhelming. Then when a student speaks up about it, they get shut down because we "aren't in school everyday so we have plenty of time." As a teacher, I would want to be more understanding with students than what I feel I have gotten from many teachers. After all, education is one of the most powerful tools someone can have. Students should feel valued and respected by their teachers so that they’re more willing to participate in class discussions. Students should receive an education that prepares them with life skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving. I decided to pursue a career in education because I want to pay forward the excellent experiences my teachers gave to me throughout my life. My favorite ones made us feel like we were going to be great one day. They recognized our potential and wanted to nurture it, which is exactly what I want to do. My life goal is to make people feel like they matter, so why not pick a job where I have opportunities to do that daily? Some days your students are just plain and simply not feeling it, sometimes you yourself aren't feeling it, both parties can be out of their zone. Other days everybody is ready to learn and participate and so are you, as a teacher you should aim to make sure that you're in this camp close to 99.9% of the time. I say this because without the enthusiasm or interest displayed by you, you will not connect with your students, meaning they're not getting the education they deserve. The role of an educator is more so about providing an engaging space to learn and the drive to learn than it really is about cramming information about the 13th century war in Britain over whether people wanted to be Catholic. At the end of the day it is far more important that your students can make meaningful or insightful comments or connections to that topic, rather than being able to tell you who the general of the 36th battalion was and when was he the general. In the mind of the student, and to me, it's useless information and it is not engaging in the slightest. What is useful is being able to talk about this event and connect it to the modern day and vice versa. The teacher should be facilitating these discussions. This of course was just an example using the subject of history as a backdrop, it can be applied to any subject though. In Algebra 2 tell me where and when exactly I will be using these concepts along with how to do them, context is so important to so many students. In Engineering don't tell your students what makes a bridge structurally stable, have the students build their own bridges utilizing the information that you've bestowed upon them. In English do not spend an entire period preforming a speech on why that curtain was red, have your students form the discussions around what they see as the important aspects of the reading. Most likely the curtain is just red because the author wanted it to be red, over analyzing minute details is what makes students hate English. I will also motivate my students and establish a welcoming environment in the classroom by building relationships with them. I believe that these are key factors of being an educator because students that feel welcome in their classes are more likely to ask questions, participate in class discussions, and enjoy learning. I also believe that several students nowadays don’t recognize the opportunities they have and the ways that it can help them in the future, which is something that I want to emphasize to my students because getting a head start on our future is only going to help us in the long run. This would tie in with my ultimate goal of helping students reach their full potential. Moreover, I believe that all students are unique individuals, which means that each student works at their own pace and has different needs that need to be met in the classroom. When I was in Kindergarten, I was always sad that I only got to go to school for half a day while my brother got to go a full day. So, when he got home, he would take the time to teach me what I learned that day in school. He would also take the time to read with me. He would have me read the Magic Treehouse books to him out loud, and would allow me to take my time and help me sound out words when I needed it. By providing me with a place where I knew it would be okay to make mistakes and to ask for help when I needed it, he provided me with a goal as a teacher to make sure all of my students feel like this. They should want to learn and want to grow without fear of failure or judgement. My goal is to help my students to find out what they are passionate about and supporting them no matter what that may be by making my students feel the way I did when I was learning to read with my brother. Every student has potential and it is up to us as teachers to help them figure out what they want to use that potential for. Students are told too often that there are things that they can't do. As a teacher I would understand that all students learn differently and at a different pace but that would not prevent me from pushing them to be the best version that they could be. As a teacher I wouldn’t allow my students or myself to ever believe that going to a certain school or a private school made them “better” or “smarter” than those who went to public school. I would put the belief that hard work and perseverance was a very important piece that they needed to be successful. In my classroom I would implement a belief that self improvement was really important. We would do this by not making fun of each other for getting a question wrong or saying something silly, but rather make it a teaching moment to educate the students. I would understand that when giving out assignments that it should be based on what is happening either in the classroom, community, or like we are currently experiencing in that we are experiencing a pandemic. As a result of this I would be understanding to a degree that sometimes work will be handed or won’t be up to my high standard. However, I would let it be known that when I said an assignment had a hard due date or had to be in by a certain time, I wouldn't be as lenient as I would normally be. This I believe would make me a better teacher by helping me to be more personable and allowing my students to connect on a deeper level.  The goals that I would want to accomplish would be to always see growth in my students. Whether that be from an emotional standpoint or from an academic standpoint. Both of these things I believe to be very important for my students to succeed in their lives. Everyone has so much potential, and I want my students to know and feel nothing short of that. To do so, it’s crucial to address societal and systematic issues including wealth disparities, racism, bias, and more, which can be so incredibly draining and discouraging for students to reach their full potential. I feel education is amazing because it is a powerful equalizer and opens vast opportunities that cannot be attained without some form of education. I want to be flexible, and utilize this precious time and opportunity to give my students the resources and support they need to succeed. For example, if one student has trouble reading, I will make sure that I listen and understand exactly why they’re struggling and be able to provide them guidance as needed (like having them read a book that they find interesting or passionate about). Sometimes, class discussions are a great way for students to get involved and connect on a deeper level. Other times, individual thinking is needed. Either way, I understand that my students are diverse and are coming from very distinct backgrounds, and no “one solution fits all.” I think this way because I’m truly grateful for those that went above and beyond to provide me opportunities and lessons I truly never thought I needed or will ever accomplish. I’m grateful that they even believed in my potential when I didn’t. Even when I felt insecure and lost, I’m glad they were the “light shining nearby”-always guiding me closer to success and a higher purpose. Their patience, perseverance, and belief in me through tough waters are incredibly important to me, and these attributes are a little bit of something I hold onto and apply to my life everyday (especially during this pandemic).
