John W

A Monster Calls

Patrick Ness

Fiction

Plot: Conor kept on having the same nightmare. This is when A Monster calls to Conor’s aide and helps him solve the mystery of his nightmare. The monster is a tree. The Monster told him 3 stories. Conor had to find out the morale of all the stories and connect the stories’s morale with his nightmare. He eventually finds out the nightmare is about his mom dying. His mom then gets sick and is slowly dying. Conor has to learn to let her go.

Review:

I would give this story a 5/5. It has been my favorite book that I’ve ever read. Even thought it was a really sad book, I still enjoyed it. I also liked the book because lots of it was figurative and you had to figure out what it meant. I would’ve changed a few parts of Conor being bullied. My favorite part would be Conor beating up the bully. I would recommend this book to anyone 13 and up. It’s only because it takes a lot of thinking power and comprehension. I want to read more books by Patrick Ness.

We Were Liars

Emily Jenkins

Mystery, Drama

We Were Liars mainly follows a girl named Cadence. When she was fifteen, her father and mother were fighting a lot and were having a lot of troubles. That summer, she was in the garden with her mother. Her dad took a pistol and shot Cadence in the chest while he was driving away to go see another woman. A few years later she moves and starts meeting a lot of her family members she never knew she had. As she meets the new people, she starts getting suspicious of her family. The more the story goes along, you learn new, dark secrets about her family and her dad.

I would give this book a ⅘ because it starts out strong but in the middle it kind of loses you and gets boring, but the ending is worth it, trust me. I would definitely recommend this book.

Michael P

Heat

Mike Lupica

Realistic fiction

Heat by Mike Lupica is a book for all boys that play baseball and are really interested in the game of baseball and the background that baseball players from foreign countries have. The book is about a boy named Miguel Arroyo and he came to the united states from Cuba. His favorite player is Ricardo Gonzales (also known as El Grande), and he tries to watch all of the games at his friend house whenever El Grande Pitches. Miguel looks up to El Grande and copies all of his signature moves and tries to be just like him. The biggest reason he loves El Grande is because he also grew up in the country Cuba. Miguel used to live with his brother Carlos and his dad but his dad died after they lived in new york for a while which was horrible. They decided not to tell anyone besides his best friend. Since they didn’t tell anyone about their dad dying Miguel decided to live with his brother Carlos even though Carlos was too young to be staying with Miguel. Miguel is a really good baseball player and an especially good pitcher. He and his brother Carlos live together as Carlos is too young to be staying with Miguel. They end up lying and procrastinating it out until Carlos is old enough to be keeping Miguel.

I give the book a 5 out of 5 stars because it shows how not all of the best athletes had perfect backgrounds as kids and most of them had tough lives. I like that because there are some kids that read those books and might have the same background that Miguel Arroyo had. The fact that someone with Miguel’s background could read this is awesome because they could realise that they are not the only one with a tough life that could make it to the majors. I did not like when they had to lie to the police and stuff because I feel like when dealing with the police for those situations you should just be honest. That is the only thing I would have changed, but I would definitely recommend Heat to all of my friends because it is a little different but it is great!

At one point birds come flying into the car and try taking all the food. So Greg and his family has to survive the vacation and have to go threw a lot of obstacles to do so. The book is good and always has new stuff happening.

I would rate this book a ⅘ stars because it was really good but had some bad parts. It was good because their is a ton of stuff that makes you want to keep reading and find out what's next, like the part when he sees a bird through the sunroof and throws a piece of food at it and then his mom yells at him and says that they are all gonna want some and he looks up and a huge group of birds come flying threw the sunroof. I don’t like how in this book he never gets along with his younger brother because i don't think that is realistic you always sometime in your life have a good time with someone in your family that doesn't like you. The thing that i would change in this book is that the only thing that makes him want to go on vacation is to meet a pro gamer. I would recommend this book to anyone who like a family book with a lot of funny parts.

Million-Dollar Throw

Mike Lupica

real-fiction/sports

I recommend this book to people who like football and sports. I rate it a ⅘.

Nate Brodie is the main Character and also the 8th grade star quarter for the New England Patriots little league team in this book. But for short they call him Brady for his awesome arm. There is a problem in this book and it is that Brady's best friend Abby is going blind and might be going away for a blind person school. Brady is upset because She both is becoming blind and because she is going away for school. Another problem in the book is that Brady has to throw a football through a small target to win 1 million dollars during half time.

Call of The Wild

Author Jack London

Genre is adventure

The Call of The Wild is about a dog named Buck whois a mix of st.bernard and a scotch shepard but has ansester wolf blood. His owner desided to sell him after the gold rush was descovered. He became a sleed dog to two men who didn’t know how to take care of there sleed dogs. There was eight of them and though the story almost half starved to death and the others drowned after ice broke and they all got pulled under. The only one that survived is Buck, and a man took Buck in and took care of him. Though the story seemed to have a happy ending it didn’t after the man that Buck loved was killed by indians. Buck filled with rage becomes a serpent deamon of death killing and hunting all the indians down one by one. Buck finds a pack of wolfs and the leader happend to be his brother. And Buck became the alpha male of the pack.

My rating is 5/5 because it showes a lot of true passion after everything happend to buck though the story.
