His father was a local school principal and his mother was secretary to the Leicestershire committee for Basque children. David was a middle child, with an older brother named Richard and a younger brother named John.


Sir David Attenborough went to school in 1931 at the age of 5 at Wygseston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester. While at school he became fascinated with fossils. He eventually won a scholarship to Clare College Cambridge in 1945 to study geology and zoology and graduated with a degree in natural sciences in 1947
