Pd 1 Otters: Human Impact + Abiotic & Biotic Limiting Factors that Effect Natural Selection by Kellie Stover

Each student must add a note to this padlet. 1-
Put your note in the column of your ASSIGNED Topic; 2 - Type the name the Limiting Factor first - 3.Next Identify/type if that factor is abiotic or biotic - 4. Finally, explain how that factor effects "natural selection" See Mrs. S for clarification if needed

It is abiotic because it is mostly caused by humans putting to much carbon and gas into the atmosphere.

•Scientists say that today’s warming is primarily caused by humans putting to much carbon into the atmosphere, like burning coal, oil, releasing gas into the air, and more. The gas gets trapped inside the atmosphere and kills the polar bears.
•Climate effects natural selection in the Arctic because with the polar bears, their feeding grounds are melting away as it gets hotter up there.
•Glaciers are melting in the North Pole.

Some reasons how this effects natural selection is that it can totally wipe out spices, it can destroy their environments, causing them to not have homes and resources. An example is a hurricane. A hurricane can destroy an environment and take out the land and animals living there causing some life to disappear or relate.

Selective breeding/ artificial selection: biotic
Selective Brreding is when people breed animals for specific traits such as speed or strength. An example of selective breeding is when farmers select cattle with beneficial traits like large in size or produce lots of milk. Another example is breeders select cats with desirable traits such as calmness and they want the cat to have a low amount of dandruff that may cause an allergic reaction. Selective breeding or artificial selection has beneficial ways and negative ways of effecting the environment. The negative way is it makes a risk of changing the elvolution of a species and because humans breed different plants and animals of particular traits this can lead to a risk. It effects the environment is a positive way because can influence the worlds food production like improving quality seeds, grains, and increases levels of protein in meat.

The positives are mainly towards humans those being stuff like having more food from cows that produce more meat, winning contests with show dogs and pigeons, and having an animal companion. The negatives are directed towards the animals , those being that most of the animals natural instincts aren’t as potent as they would be if naturally bred, meaning that if they were thrown into the wild they wouldn’t cope well. It affects natural selection in this way that the ones bred weak survive for being good for show or a good companion.

Selective breeding is the process where humans take plants and animals with desired traits and breed them together to get the desired outcome. When use selective breeding you can damage the gene pool. A polydactyl cat is a genetically mutated breed where they have an extra toe on each foot, but there is a genetic condition called feline radial hypoplasia which can disable the cat because it causes underdeveloped or twisted forelegs.

Selective breeding
Biotic
Humans selectively breed animals to best adapt them to their environments for numerous reasons. One reason is to help endangered animals survive, if a animal that is endangered isn’t already in a reserve, then breeders will atleast try to give them the best traits to help them survive and reproduce. Another reason humans would breed animals is to just give animals hem a better chance of survival. An example of this is, if a human wants to help a deer population survive in a polluted forest they could give that deer a darker fur color to increase its camouflage. This deer would then reproduce with other deers and there would eventually be a high amount of deer, that hunters might be able to start hunting them again.

Selective breeding is humans selecting animals to breed so that they can best adapt to our environment. One reason they do this is to make more of one kind of species and they will help because if they fine and breed 2 animals that are good in an environment then they can make more of the same animal because the population could be decreasing. Also the more animals they make the better because it makes a better selection for animals to eat other animal as well.

Small mammals who do not are also exposed to less predation. Overall, hibernation effects the balance of population over winter months.

Vaccinations:Biotic

Vaccinations can cause many side effects such as joint pain, autism, fever, but different side effects may occur to different organisms and animals. They all react differently to what they are given.

A vaccine essentially carries the weak version of a virus, and it is used so the immune system may adapt to the virus in case it will enter the immune system again.

In 2006 a vaccine plant named Merck had illegally discharged 25 gallons of cyanide into a river, and then all the cyanide flowed into the water treatment plant. That then reached the fish's habitat which killed off 1,000 fish.

If any of these chemical components would enter an environment it could cause all the species in that given area to inherit those side effects such as autism. This would cause entire species to essentially not be able to fully adapt to fending off a predator.

Those side effects would become apart of their genes at that point. Those chemical components could also enter other marine biomes such as areas as the ocean. This could cause all species in the ocean to inherit these side effects.
