In order to be articulate in dance you must be able to understand music, timing, rhythm, flexibility, fluidity, precision, coordination and be able to apply verbal cues to the way your body is moving. Verbal communication is vital as every command, critique, and suggestions are key to building upon your dance skills. Without verbal communication you could never keep timing with music or understand dance terms. Music is a quintessential part of dance as it is our guide to every dance move and is our only auditory during performance. Key dance terminology consists of: full out, turn out, tondue, chasse, plie, arabesque, releve, brush, developpe, je te, and pirouette. In dance class and practice these terms are used frequently and are necessary for coaches to communicate to dancers alike. As dancers we must also be able to collaborate with other dancers to refine and clean our dances and decide the best ways to do each move. Knowing how to follow symbols and visuals in dance is significant in being articulate in this literacy because it's one main way to learn and pick-up choreography. An example of this would be when learning a dance the visual of your coach or captain performing it helps you understand each move and the proper way to execute it. We also have symbols to let us know our placement in certain dance formations. Visual representation enables you to match your coach’s technique and preferred methods.
