i thought ogls have it really easy and they dont have to do much work. turns out, its even easier than i thought as i love the work i get to do in giving back to the yijc community. when you view a task as a blessing and not as a chore, its alot easier to get it done. even though my ogms are not the most proactive people, i feel like orientation so far has got them to bond in a good way.

Before Orientation, I saw OGLs as energetic, confident leaders who effortlessly brought groups together. Now that I’m an OGL, I realize it’s less about being naturally outgoing and more about putting in effort to engage others, even when it feels tiring or awkward. The role isn’t just about hype—it’s about creating a space where everyone feels included, which takes more thought and patience than I expected.

But after being an OGL, I realised that doing that task is easier said than done as engaging everyone can be difficult as different people have different personalities. Hence I need to be receptive of how my OGMs are to properly engage with them

I thought that an OGL was someone who was just like extra manpower for the SC’s, like some people who help to bring the OGM’s to where they are supposed to be and just like someone they can talk to or have fun with and can like relate to during orientation. But after orientation I feel OGL’s are not just someone who brings the OGM’s around to where they will be doing their orientation stuff at but rather we are someone who is supposed to help them transition into Junior College life better. Whenever they have any queries they always come to me to address them, asking is this right for them? Hence, I feel that as an OGL it is our job to inspire them and be someone they can look up to during their first few days of orientation, be someone who can be beside them when they need some help and help them make friends and have fun. =)

I knew that it'll be tough to lead a large group of students to carry out the activities but now I know that there is more to it than just that. For instance, OGLs had to familiarise with the schedule and be flexible and enthusiastic even when we're tired so as to maintain the energy of the og.

Before being an OGL, I thought that being and OGL was just about leading the group around and doing stuff for them and ushering them everywhere. I thought that it was probably going to be easy and that I would be so hype during it to hype up my OGMS. But after being an OGL, I realised that even though being an OGL does include all of that, it’s also super tiring and requires a lot of social and emotional intelligence, so that you can properly bond with your OGMS. Because of that, it actually ends up being super tiring and thus you can’t be as hype as you want. You have to plan your route and manage so many different people with different expectations and personalities - which is impossible to do perfectly. Furthermore, you still need to work with your OGL mates and there’s always a risk of miscommunication between the OGLs and the SCs. With all of these variables, it’s very hard to be an OGL, and it’s super tiring, but in the end seeing all your OGMS being happy and enjoying their time makes the experience worth it.

Before Orientation, I thought of OGLs as energetic leaders who mainly hyped up and guided the new students in their new JC environment. However, stepping into the role made me realise it’s so much more from balancing logistics and fostering inclusivity to ensuring everyone feels supported. This experience has pushed me to hone my leadership skills further into practice, as leading an OG puts the skills that I learnt previously, including adaptability and empathy, to the test and help me grow overall as a leader.

Originally, I thought most of the work would be behind the scenes and facilitating/making things go smoothly. However, it was a short lived expectation as it was actually really stressful and much on sit work and adjustments had to be made to make it a much more enjoyable experience for OGMs

Before ori, my impression of an ogl was that they just babysit the ogms. But now I feel like its babysitting with a few extra steps. I think being an ogl means you have to go the extra mile to support them in important decisions such as subject combi and cca. Sometimes it also means catering to certain needs and having empathy for them.

Being an ogl i feel like ogls have a lot on their plate, not only do they have to be quick on their feet when dealing with unforeseen circumstances but they have to remain professional in front of their ogms when dealing with these circumstances.

I thought being an OGL simply meant being a bridge between the OGMs and the college since I’m familiar with the school environment. However, I realised that as an OGL, it is important to be observant and genuine towards all conversations we have with the OGMs so that we can mix and match the OGMs with similar traits or backgrounds. This is so that the OGMs can socialise and get comfortable with one another and no one is excluded from the OG
