i thought ogls have it really easy and they dont have to do much work. turns out, its even easier than i thought as i love the work i get to do in giving back to the yijc community. when you view a task as a blessing and not as a chore, its alot easier to get it done. even though my ogms are not the most proactive people, i feel like orientation so far has got them to bond in a good way.

I think i find it more tiring. Because not only do i have to hype up the OG but also make sure i have energy and clarity to run filler games with the OGMs. I also need to project my voice when some OGMs are not listening/cannot hear.

I knew that being an OGL, you'll be required to engage ur OGMs and really ensure that they have a memorable orientation that makes them forget about all the negative pre assumptions they might have. But after being an OGL, I realised that doing that task is easier said than done as engaging everyone can be difficult as different people have different personalities. I thought that we only need to take care of our ogs. But during orientation I realised we also have to see the movements and timings for other ogs during movement and activities throughout the college. We have to also cover and help those ogls that are lacking in manpower to ensure that the programme proceed smoothly for everyone.

honestly, I thought that SCs would just be supporting the OGLs' back by preparing logistics and being game masters, but now that I've been through Day 1-3, I now learned that SCs need to run everywhere to support each other and need to have the energy to hype everyone up. I'm looking forward to the last 2 days of Orientation and hope all of us including the J1s have a good time!

my impression of an ogl before ori was that it certainly wasn't an easy job, and that there would be a lot of running around to do and effort needed to connect with the ogms, especially because they are so close in age (which also makes it harder to assert any kind of authority).

after 3 days of orientation, i think my impression still stands. it simply feels like I am now living it out. However, the execution has been better than expected so far!

Now that I’m part of it I understand how everything requires manpower from slides, av, making games, logs. Having never done an orientation with such a scale in manpower and people to support me, I had always viewed orientation as a nightmare because of all the uncertainties present, I thought as an SC we will have to spec into multiple roles and do a lot of things but now I know that because I have so many people to support the event and because they are all competent people who are willing to learn, I have learnt that it is not as much as a nightmare as I had thought. Having this mentality of people supporting you and covering for you is so surreal but is genuinely a good and reassuring feeling to have, so I am thankful.

In terms of what I had thought regarding my role, before I thought I had to do a lot more things and now I know it is not as bad as I thought. For now…

I thought that an OGL was someone who was just like extra manpower for the SC’s, like some people who help to bring the OGM’s to where they are supposed to be and just like someone they can talk to or have fun with and can like relate to during orientation. But after orientation I feel OGL’s are not just someone who brings the OGM’s around to where they will be doing their orientation stuff at but rather we are someone who is supposed to help them transition into Junior College life better. Whenever they have any queries they always come to me to address them, asking is this right for them? Hence, I feel that as an OGL it is our job to inspire them and be someone they can look up to during their first few days of orientation, be someone who can be beside them when they need some help and help them make friends and have fun. =)

Now that I became an OGL and experienced orientation I found out that it is like that to lead by example but do it in like a different way and not be too strict. My impression of an OGL is that you need to be super outspoken, hype and outgoing, but now I realise it’s not true as anyone makes a great OGL in their own unique ways.

I also realise that orientation really helped me bond with my other OGLs as we have to adapt and work together closely in different situations, as well as tapping onto each other strengths.

I knew orientation would be tiring but I didn’t imagine it being this tiring. It helps me better appreciate my OGLs back when I was in J1.

Before being an OGL, I thought that being and OGL was just about leading the group around and doing stuff for them and ushering them everywhere. I thought that it was probably going to be easy and that I would be so hype during it to hype up my OGMS. But after being an OGL, I realised that even though being an OGL does include all of that, it’s also super tiring and requires a lot of social and emotional intelligence, so that you can properly bond with your OGMS. Because of that, it actually ends up being super tiring and thus you can’t be as hype as you want. You have to plan your route and manage so many different people with different expectations and personalities - which is impossible to do perfectly. Furthermore, you still need to work with your OGL mates and there’s always a risk of miscommunication between the OGLs and the SCs. With all of these variables, it’s very hard to be an OGL, and it’s super tiring, but in the end seeing all your OGMS being happy and enjoying their time makes the experience worth it.

I thought being an OGL simply meant being a bridge between the OGMs and the college since I’m familiar with the school environment. I understand that SC is not just overseeing and helping out but really the main support for all events even if it's not your own comm. Our job scope is wider than I imagined , esp for OGL comm where we are in charge of a few more things, but I am glad we all did well.
