In chapter 3, "Diagnosis and Treatment" in the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, the author portrays Henrietta's results from the biopsy and Howard Jones and his boss, Richard Wesley TeLinde, working hard to develop and improve methods for treating cervical cancer, and it ends with Henrietta getting her first treatment for her cervix cancer. Henrietta gets her biopsy results from the pathology lab, the result was Epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix, Stage 1. After it tells about the conversation that top gynecologists were having about cervical cancer around that time about improving methods for treating cervical cancers. TeLinde then argues that non-invasive cancer can still spread, becoming something more serious if not treated. But many doctors didn't believe him. TeLinde planned to prove his theory and knew George Gey wanted to get tissues from the cervix to grow outside the body. If he could study them under a microscope, he could show that the two types of cancer looked the same but, most cells died quickly and those who didn't die hardly survived but didn't grow. TeLinde offered Gey a supply of cervical cancer tissues in exchange for trying to grow some cells. Gey expected and got samples from any women who had cervical cancer and then when to Hopkins, including Henrietta. Henrietta didn't tell her family she has cancer. She goes back to Hopkins for treatment. The doctor placed radium inside Henrietta's cervix and took samples of her tumor which he dents to Gey's lab.

In Chapter 6 "Lady's on The Phone" in Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", The author talks about her experience with trying to get in touch with Henrietta's family. Her journey begins as she gets in contact with Roland Pattillo, a professor of gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine. He was hesitant to give her any information at first, asking questions to make sure she didn't have ill intentions. When he was assured that she really did care about Henrietta's story, he gave her the information to get in contact with Deborah Lacks, Henrietta's only daughter still alive. When Henrietta called Deborah and told her that she wanted to write a book about Henrietta's life, Deborah was ecstatic. She started spitting out information that Rebecca wasn't able to understand very well, and when the call ended Rebecca wasn't really able to get anything from their conversation. She called again the next day, and this time Deborah was very hesitant. She said that Rebecca had to "convince the men." She gave Rebecca Day's number. Rebecca tried calling Day many times before the phone was answered. It was passed around between a few people before it was finally passed to Day, who rudely hung up on her.

In Chapter 7 "The Death and Life of Cell Culture" in Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," We learn more about the history of Immortal Cell Culture and why the public wasn't so quick to believe that Gey had really done what he'd said he'd done. We learn about a Scientist named Alexis Carrel, who claimed to have created an Immortal Chicken Heart in 1912. It blew up in the media before any other scientist was able to check it or recreate it. Carrel started to say things that made people question his credibility. He was saying things like that he could clone a chicken bigger than a continent and such. He was a eugenicist, meaning he had ideals very similar to nazism. As the years went by, many scientists began to question his credibility. One scientist in particular named Leonard Hayflick was able to discredit him using the basic rule of biology; that cells can only divide a set number of times. This led to the public being weary of the news of HeLa cells, but once more evidence was given they started to believe Gey and other scientists.

Henrietta body was taken over by tumors everywhere and she could no longer process toxins. Her family and friends in the Baltimore heard that she needs blood, so they go to donate blood. At one point she had cared for all of them when they first came to work at Sparrow's Point. Emmett one of Henrietta cousins and was closer to her, when Emmett saw Henrietta, he did not recognize her. She was strapped to the bed to keep her from falling when she had seizures.

In Chapter 12, "The Storm" In Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," We learn more about what happened to Henrietta's body after she died. After her death, doctors asked Day if they could perform an autopsy on her. They wanted to get more tissue samples of different tumors oh her body to hopefully create more cells, but Day didn't know that. He refused at first, but after they told him that doing it could eventually help his children, he agreed to a partial autopsy, because he wanted her to be presentable for her funeral. Henrietta's funeral was not fancy. She was in a plain pine box and was carried in the back of a rusted old truck, because that's all that Day could afford. Her family liked up along the road she was driven on and watched as she was taken to the grave yard. She was left in the hallway of her old house during the service. Her family says that they don't remember much about the service, but that as they were covering her body, a huge storm came in.

In chapter 13, 'The HeLa factory,' we learn more about how HeLa cells began to be mass-produced, and what some of the first discoveries made using HeLa cells were. Shortly after Henrietta's death, plans for a large-scale HeLa production operation were being set up to help find a cure for polio. Gey developed growing in suspension, a method that made mass-producing HeLa cells much easier. When the NFIP realized this, they contacted him and asked to use the cells to test a new vaccine for polio, because testing it on monkeys was too expensive. He agreed, and they soon found that the cells were more susceptible to the virus than any cultured cells had ever been, making them perfect for testing the vaccine. Gey then developed a way of mailing the cells across the world without them dying in transit by adding extra mediums and putting them on ice. The NFIP decided to let the Tuskegee Institute, one of the most prestigious black universities in the country, be in charge of growing the cells. The operation started small, but as it grew its staff grew to almost six times the amount it began with, and so did the number of cells they produced. The cells were initially only sold to institutions fighting polio, but once they were sure they were not going to run out of HeLa cells, they began selling the cells to anyone for $10 plus shipping. HeLa cells helped to launch the field of virology, and standardized the field of cell culture. Eventually, a standard medium was made so that scientists could recreate each other's experiments. The cells also led to the discovery that normal humans had 46 chromosomes, making it easier to identify chromosomal disorders. Samuel Reader and Vincent Monroe were the first to set up an industrial scale distribution center, eventually becoming a multi-billion dollar industry. After all his work with HeLa cells, Gey wanted to move on from them but also was upset that he didn't have complete control anymore. He only reluctantly wrote one short publication on his techniques and began to send letters to many scientists trying to restrict the way they used HeLa cells. None of them listened, and eventually, people became curious about the woman behind the cells.

Chapter 14, 'Helen Lane' of Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is about the media trying to get Gey and TeLinde to disclose Henrietta's name. It started when The Minneapolis Star wrote an article saying her name was Henrietta Lakes. Questions arose as to if that was her real name. A reporter named Ronald Berg asked Gey for her real name, so he could write a detailed article about her. Gey refused, and after one more attempt, Berg stopped asking. Another reporter named Bill Davidson then approached the two about an interview. This time Gey agreed to be interviewed, as long as he could review the article before publication, and with-hold Henrietta's name. Davidson hesitantly agreed, and eventually the article was published saying that he had taken the samples from her after death, and that her name was Helen Lane. It is speculated that Gey gave Davidson this name to throw reporters off course to finding her real name, and if so, it worked. Her name was believed to be Helen Lane from then on, and because of that, her family had no idea they were really Henrietta's.

On page 106 in chapter 14, you can see that Berg was using strong word choices to make his letter more persuasive. In his letter to Dr. TeLinde he writes, "An intrinsic part of this story would be to describe how these cells, originally obtained from Henrietta Lakes, are being grown and used for the benefit of mankind..." His use of the word "intrinsic" as opposed to "interesting" or "helpful" makes it seem more vital that he is able to use Henrietta's name in his article.

In Chapter 15, 'Too Young to Remember,' of Rebecca Skloot's "The immortal life of Henrietta Lacks," We learn more about what life was like for the Lacks children when Henrietta died. Day was working two jobs, so Lawrence the oldest son dropped out of school to help take care of the other children. Lawrence would often go out to billiards clubs, saying he was 18 even though he was only 16, and because he didn't have a birth certificate or social security number, they believed him, and he was drafted into the military at 16. The kids were then taken care of by Ethel, who was extremely abusive, especially to the youngest son Joe. Her husband Galen was also sexually abusive towards Deborah. Lawrence eventually came back from the Military and moved in with his girlfriend Bobbette. When the two learned of the children's abuse, Bobbette demanded they all come live with her and Lawrence. The abuse from Ethel had turned Joe into a very mean boy, and everyone blamed it on Henrietta being pregnant with him while she had a tumor. The sexual abuse from Galen however did not stop. He would regularly visit her or pick her up from school and have his way with her. When Bobbette asked why she was crying one day, she told her that Galen would hit her and talk dirty to her. She didn't tell Bobbette that he had raped her because she was afraid she'd get in trouble. Bobbette told Ethel and Galen that if they ever touched any of the Lacks children again she'd kill them. The abuse continued, however, and she would try to resist, but eventually, Galen got Day to help, and Day would do nothing as Galen beat Deborah in the back seat of his car

In Chapter 16, "Spending Eternity in the Same Place" Rebecca Skloot visits Cliff at his house in Lack's town. Cliff's house was very rundown, there were holes in the ceiling, windows and walls that were patched up with newspapers and duct tape and the walls were smudged with dirt and oil. Cliff took Rebecca to the "Lack's cemetery" which held all of the family members that belonged to the Lackses. Cliff said that they had ran out of room in the cemetery and lost track of where some graves were (because some graves didn't have tombstones) and they ended up putting graves on top of each other. Cliff told Rebecca that Benjamin Lacks had sued to take some of the land from the black heirs that Albert Lacks had given the land to originally when he died. A court agreed with Benjamin and divided the land in halves, the top half went to the black Lackses (now lacks town) and the bottom half to Benjamin Lacks.

In Chapter 17,"Illegal, Immortal, and Deplorable" A virologist by the name of Chester Southam conducted experiment where he injected the HeLa cells into the arms of patients that recently had cancer. The results of his experiments showed that the cancer patients regrew tumors in their arms that were 2 centimeters (the size of Henrietta's tumor when she went in for the radium treatments). Southam was curious what would happen when he injected the cells into non cancerous patients, so he gathered prisoners that volunteered to participate in this experiment, and his results showed that the men fought off of the cancer and every time they were re-injected, their bodies fought the cancer off faster each time. Then three doctors refused to perform this experiment on their patients without their consent because 7 Nazi doctors had been sentenced to hanging because they were performing experiments on Jews without their consent. This led the NIH to investigate these scientists performing these experiments and they fond that only 9/52 had a policy to protect the patients and only 16 used consent forms. And because of these results, the NIH required the scientists to have al of their proposals approved by the reviewboard.

In chapter 18, "Strangest Hybrid" in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a doctor named Hyatt gave a subject something that he thought was normal human skin cells. Not before long, that person got cancer so Hyatt freaked out but he found out other scientists had the same problem as well. The scientists knew the cells were contaminated since this was happening over and over again. They couldn't quite figure out what it was though contaminating the cells. This inspired the scientists to get more organized. Gey gave away all of his original HeLa cells so he had to get some from Scherer to figure out more about the contamination in the cells. All of this lead to cell sex. This resulted in hybrids getting created. Harris did the same thing with experimenting with HeLa cells and chickens to see what would happen to them. This helped them learn more about hybrids and the decrease in chromosomes.

In this chapter you see that one scientist dropped what is called "The HeLa Bomb" at a conference of cell culture researchers. He had found that HeLa had contaminated many of the other cell cultures used by many scientists. Very few scientists believed him because of the huge implications his findings held. Many of the scientists did not show resiliency, and just ignored his findings even though they knew they were true because they thought is would be easier to just continue using the cells instead of putting in the large amount of effort it would take to create new cultures that were not contaminated.

No matter how much scientists thought they were preventing the contamination, they weren't because HeLa cells can float on air particles and travel through the air so they are seriously everywhere. All the scientists were saying bad things about Gartler's theory but when they all went back to their labs, they found the same issues Gartler found in his cell culture.

In chapter 22, "The Fame She So Richly Deserves" in the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks contains information on Gey and how he had pancreatic cancer. He wanted to help people just like Henrietta did with her cells but the doctors said his cancer was too serious that it wasn't possible. Instead he went through chemotherapy that just about killed him. right before his death, he told Mary Kubicek that she could release Henrietta's name into the public. Howard Jones went and looked back at Henrietta's biopsy and he found that the cells were misdiagnosed. Henrietta was a big factor in the paper again but yet her name was still wrong. Jones finally stepped up and gave out the name of HeLa's donor

In chapter 23, Bobbette learns of Henrietta's cells after it being unknown to the family for 20 years. Bobbette told Lawrence, who told Day. At the time., they only were able to understand that part of Henrietta was alive somewhere. After this, the family were scared, and in a bout of bad timing, Victor McKusick, a Hopkins geneticist, and his assistant Susan Hsu asked them to take some of their blood to "Test for Cancer." Because they thought the blood was being taken for cancer tests, even though they were not, the Lacks family agreed. They never signed any forms, and were never given any information about Henrietta's cells. Deborah became very interested in her mother's cells, and when she called about the cancer tests and was rejected information, she started doing more research. She eventually came to believe that she had been injected with cancer cells. The doctors kept calling for more blood, and she refused, but she was never told any information about what they did with the blood they attained in the first place. She eventually went back to McKusick and asked about her mothers cells. He assumed she had already known about all of the things HeLa has done and just gave her an autographed copy of a genetics textbook before sending her away. In that textbook there was a photo of Henrietta, one of the first Deborah had ever seen. Hsu later apologized and said she never meant to keep information from the family.

In chapter 31, 'HeLa, Goddess of Death,' Deborah begins to really trust Rebecca. They spend as much time as possible together, laughing and enjoying each others company as friends. Deborah is still struggling with trusting Rebecca, so Rebecca makes an effort to do whatever she needed to to gain Deborah's trust. As their relationship deepens, Deborah finally is able to trust her, and tells her that she will give her her mother's medical files when she is ready. Rebecca agrees, and they continue on as friends. Deborah begins taking a sleeping drug that make her very lethargic, and her grandsons call it the 'Dummy Drug.' We learn of all of the illnesses Deborah has, and how she cant afford to get them all treated. While on this drug, Deborah spends most nights printing out any article she finds that even mentions the name 'Henrietta,' or 'HeLa.' While searching HeLa, she finds that there is a Marvel character named HeLa, who seems very symbolic of her mother's cells. At the end of the chapter, Deborah and her brother Zakariyya agree to meet with a doctor named Christoph Langauer to finally see HeLa cells for themselves.
