         <description><![CDATA[<div>It is important for students to understand the meaning behind symbols used in algebra. For example, no more than 10% of students were able to answer the problem <br>8+4=___+5<br><br>The most common number that students wrote in was 12, because students see the equal sign as "answer comes first" instead of "is the same as." These misconceptions come from children only seeing problems in early years written as<br>8+5=___, where the answer always comes after an equal sign. <br><br>This can be address in the following way: rather than always asking students to solve a problem (like <br>45+60=105) ask them to instead find an equivalent expression. </div>]]></description>
