Accusations spread that Jews had caused the disease by deliberately poisoning wells. all people over the age of seven were guilty as they knew about poisoning wells. 

Jews were taken as scapegoats likely because they were affected less than other people.

Thousands of Jews were murdered, often by burning at the stake, in over 350 massacres.

The Church was not able to save anyone from diseases, which then lead to many Europeans to question their religious beliefs. Many people saw the plague as a divine punishment. People often took up flagellation, which is the act of self mutilation by whipping, this became common throughout Europe and many people started to beat themselves in hope to restore themselves of the sins they committed.
