Global Issue

Throughout chapter 1, Marji explains the new mandatory rule from the government, which was to wear the veil at all times. The great majority of the female society were against such law since they felt as if all of their rights were abruptly taken from them. She explains how a young girl, used to attending an inclusive and both genders´ school, she's taken back when she is suddenly forced to wear the veil and be separated from those who she considered friends. To her, the veil symbolized a loss of personal rights to all the women who were forced to wear it.

During this chapter, Marji also envisions herself as a prophet, but due to this new chapter of self-discovery, she isn't quite sure of anything anymore. Her identity itself is shaped by what she was taught and believes is right. But what happens when wearing the veil becomes mandatory and she doesn't and can't have a say in anything? In chapter 1, the book of ¨The Complete Persepolis¨ begins the self-discovery journey of forming her identity throughout the book and how it may change as she grows and learns.

Literary Technique

Paradox, which implies a contradicting situation or statement that reveals what tells the truth, is used during this chapter. Paradox is used when they demonstrate Marji´s mother as the face of many news papers while participating in a demonstration against the veil.

Global Issue

Chapter 2 briefly gives a short historical background of how the Shah came to be. In one of the pages of the chapter itself, something that truly represents the global issue chosen would be when a mass murder of innocent civilians happened at a cinema.

The political system of a country is supposed to protect its civilians, not murder them. The police that was found outside the burning cinema were supposed to help everyone inside get out safely. Instead, due to the government, the police men tortured those who intervened and tried to enter the building. They used their power in the politics of the country and used it to their advantage to trap hundreds of people inside a burning building and abuse of those who tried to enter.

Literary Techniques

Several literary techniques used during this chapter were Allusion and Irony.

Allusion, which means a reference of an important event, is used at the very beginning by demonstrating an illustration of a bicycle filled with deceased people and the bicycle is supposed to represent revolution.

Irony is also constantly used, such situational and humorous irony. Situational irony is when the police, instead of protecting the lives of others and maintaining peace, were the ones to begin a fire at the cinema. And humorous irony when the ghosts of the deceased were exiting the building, but not alive.

Global Issue

The global issue that highly stands out during the chapter would be beliefs and values. Marji is faced with several different perspectives, including her fathers´, which makes her question what she believes in. She is also demonstrated to be loosing her unwavering faith towards God and isn't sure what if what she believes in is true. She explains to her father that the King himself came to be thanks to God, but her father shares his own perspective of the situation and how the King actually came to power.

Marjane beigns to question her own faith and what she stands for. Her personal beliefs and values are beginning to waver as she experiences new situations and becomes aware of how not everyone has the same values as her. Throughout this chapter, she gains more conscience of the current situation the government is in and how it has been worsening with the passing of the years.

Literary Techniques

The chapter represents Maryjane's thoughts with imagery and illustrative drawings that demonstrate what she is imagining. For example, imagery is used to illustrate how Marji envisions her grandfather as a prince. Juxtaposition, which is used to contrast elements, is used when they represent the differences in beliefs and values between Marjane and her father when it comes to how the King came to his position.
