For our faculty to feel equipped and empowered to be the best they can be so that students have the best possible experience - that drives their success. For our administration and leadership to feel confident that we are leading the academic innovation of the college. For our state and federal agencies to receive timely and accurate reporting of the business of the academy.

Regardless of title, we consider ourselves equals at this table. Every voice matters, so we actively pursue hearing each voice at the table. When we disagree with another person’s perspective, we do so with genuine kindness and empathy. We never lose sight of the value of civil debate to achieve our stated purpose. However, we avoid debate that is based on personal agendas and egos.

Passion

We each come to the table with a strong passion for our student and institutional success. But when we are at ALC Deans, we channel that passion through our organizational purpose to ensure we are aligned to our organizational purpose so we can get the maximum compounding effect of that passion.

For Academic Deans, I believe it means finding the time and space to solve complex, urgent issues collectively through joint projects and/or by creating mini-workshops (formal or informal led by one or more Deans) to learn new or better ways to make decisions or solve problems for the benefit of all.

We want to love what we're doing, and that includes trying new leadership strategies to achieve ALC goals, making everyone excited about what we’ll do at the next ALC meeting, and celebrating achievements, whether college-wide or at the campus level.

Because our job is generally transactional, building relationships founded on honest, transparent, and open communication is how we should conduct business. It’s imperative that we all feel we can share the good, the bad, and the challenges with everyone. Therefore, creating spaces for open discussions and making sure everyone's heard in an informal, less structured, more transparent format is key.

Our leadership role is all about being accessible, approachable, and hands-on. In regards to ALC, for instance, it could mean showing up to an events to support colleagues from another campus or creating a WhatsApp account just for Academic Deans to chat about critical/urgent matters. Many times we just need to feel someone is there to support, listen, and respond to our needs any day, any time.

Showing students the value of formal education in today's world is an urgent, complex matter that requires an immediate buy-in and response from administrators and faculty. Since the fast-pace emergence and growth of AI, Blockchain, and other innovative technologies, it is our duty to become knowledgeable and avid users of such technologies to actively engage with faculty in re-imagining teaching and learning. As such, ALC must be driving these new teaching and learning models, experimenting with fresh leadership ideas, and creating and supporting out-of-the-box problem-solving strategies.
