It's my favorite photo set because of the situation surrounding it by an unfamiliarity with the camera and also general and pure emotions. Also my homies mad
handsome

Letter to Lester

Dear Rick

Hey buddy, thank you for your letter and please don't ever worry about asking questions, speak

your mind. I’ll just get right to your questions. Overall, i think i have been well throughout this

whole ordeal. No matter how far back throughout my incarceration i look, i always felt like i was

doing well at the time. I mean there were obviously some times of mild depression, but that's

pretty normal, i always pulled out of it quickly. The interesting thing is that now if i look back, i

wouldn't want to go back to any of those times of incarceration, it's like i had the ability to cope

with these situations at that time and it wasnt a big deal back then, but it doesnt feel so fun now,

looking back. I think its just basic human defense mechanisms. So i feel like im doing really well

right now, better than ever, but who knows, ill probably look back on this someday and wonder

how i dealt with some of those dudes. For me, it has benn all of the personalities that i have to

deal with that has been the most difficult. And i actually only had to do about 8 years in and out

of a cell. And there was a part of me that liked having my own spot to go back to when i had a

good cellmate. I just kind of got into a routine, the days mold together and time starts passing

flying by. Now I'm in a “dorm” setting. It's pretty much like cubicles of 7 or 8 dudes, no cell doors

so you can pretty much cruise around all the time if you want. It took me a second to adjust but I

like it more. But yea, the first few days were insane. I felt so claustrophobic. Stuck in a cell 23

hours a day. My first few cell mates were a nightmare too. Of course, i had some thoughts of

suicide, nothing too serious. Until I lost my tria. I had my own mind set in it. Luckily they actually

put me on suicide watch. I had no sheets, very little clothing and NO property, stuck in a

depressing ass room. It sucked, but I called my dad a few times and he talked some sense into

me. He told me suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem. That seemed to make

sense, but it was hard to think of 15 years as temporary, especially with everyone telling me that

lifers never get out. But so much has changed and I can really see how temporary this stretch

is, and someday it will just be a footnote. I feel like that is with most things in life especially when

you're young. I remember when high school seemed like a lifetime.

Concussions

Concussions in the NFL have been a problem since the sport was established. The nfl and it’s carelessness for its players and safety has been responsible for hundreds of concussions and early signs of brain disease in most players in the “prime” of football. Most time a concussion wasn’t taken seriously whatsoever. Players would be allowed to go back into the game after a serious hit to the head. At an average players were hitting their heads 1,000 to 1,500 times per year, the often force was 20gs or more. Mike Webster’s case helps support the claims of brain damage, just seventeen years after retiring he was described as angrier, forgetful and couldn’t even walk. The NFL found that Mike Webster’s disabilities were caused by pepetetive trauma due to his career in the NFL. The glory and violence of football was idolized by millions, even the marketing was pointed towards violence. However, the darker side of football quickly arose, after Troy Aikman was taken to the hospital for a concussion that knocked him out cold and left him on the ground for five minutes he had short term memory loss. This grew concerns for the increase of concussions and the NFL was being pointed at for the blame, the NFL was quick to say that the cause was attleticompetilans (I think I spelled that right). MTBI was starting to become more and more common amongst more and more players and the concussions grew too. The growing problem wasn’t only affecting the pros. It was effecting the players playing highschol and youth football. In the case of an 18 year old who died ten days after his concussion
